OCU at Lubbock Christian women's basketball preview

Defending national champion Stars square off with No. 1-ranked Lady Chaps

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University takes on top-ranked and undefeated Lubbock Christian (Texas) in a battle of top 10-ranked squads.

ABOUT THE STARS: The Stars routed USAO 98-42 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena. OCU (10-2, 2-0 Sooner Athletic Conference) owned advantages in points in the paint (38-16), bench points (36-16), points off turnovers (28-4), second-chance points (22-5) and points in transition (20-2).
Lauren Gober, a 6-foot-2 senior from Newcastle, Okla., keyed the Stars with 24 points, two steals and seven 3-pointers. Gober scores an SAC-high 18.5 points a game while adding 6.3 rebounds and 2.33 steals per contest. A two-time all-American, Gober continues to increase her career production – 1,423 points, 583 rebounds 134 assists, 196 steals, 77 blocks and an OCU-record 261 3s as a Star.
Kayla MacKenzie, a 5-6 junior from Peoria, Ariz., posted 15 points and four steals while shooting 5-for-10 from the field. MacKenzie has contributed 11.8 points, 2.2 assists and 2.33 steals a game. Desiree Jeffries, a 6-foot senior from Oklahoma City, flashed her all-around game with 11 points, seven rebounds and nine assists. Jeffries averages 10.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.67 steals a game.
OCU tops NAIA Division I in scoring margin (36.7 points a game), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.43 assists per turnover) and turnover margin (plus-14.3). The Stars rank in the top five nationally in nine team statistical categories. Individually, Gober's 3.67 3-pointers per game ranks second in the NAIA. The Stars moved to sixth in the latest NAIA Division I rankings. Defending national champion OCU has been listed in all 157 polls since 1999-2000. The Stars own national championships from 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2012. SAC coaches predicted OCU would finish third place in the Sooner Athletic Conference. OCU has won or shared the SAC regular-season crown 13 times – in 1987, 1988, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012.
OCU holds the advantage 37-8 in its series against Lubbock Christian. The Stars defeated Lubbock Christian 85-56 on March 19, 2012 in the NAIA Division I Tournament semifinals at Frankfort, Ky., en route to the national championship. Desiree Jeffries collected 13 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals.

ABOUT THE LADY CHAPS: Lubbock Christian popped St. Gregory's 75-61 on Saturday in Shawnee, Okla. Lubbock Christian (16-0, 3-0 SAC) overcame 38.3 percent shooting from the field – the team's worst shooting performance this season.
Nicole Hampton, a 5-10 sophomore, ignited Lubbock Christian with 24 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals. Hampton has produced 13.9 points, 8.9 rebounds, 5.9 assists and 2.44 steals a game in 2012-13. Hampton became SAC player of the week while averaging 26.5 points and 12.0 rebounds for Jan. 1-7. Kelsey Hoppel, a 5-9 sophomore, had 15 points, eight rebounds, two assists and five steals. Hoppel averages 12.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.31 steals a game.
Lubbock Christian has been favored to win the SAC title by league coaches in the preseason.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Latricia Trammell is in the midst of her first season as head coach of the Stars. Trammell returns to OCU after serving as Western State (Colo.) head coach the past five seasons. At Western State, Trammell had 13 all-RMAC selections, including the RMAC West Division freshman of the year and RMAC player of the year. Trammell was assistant coach at OCU from 2005-07. As an assistant at OCU, Trammell mentored the Stars' first WNBA draftee, Mariam Sy of the Washington Mystics, 10 all-conference choices, the SAC player of the year, SAC newcomer of the year and four all-Americans. Trammell also spent time as head coach at Midwest City High School and Bill Ryan High School (Texas).
Steve Gomez has guided the Lubbock Christian program to unprecedented heights with nine consecutive trips to the NAIA Tournament, a national runner-up finish in 2006 and a 219-92 record for the most wins of any Lubbock Christian women's basketball coach.
