OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University popped Wayland Baptist (Texas) 75-53 Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena to pick up a second straight win.
Troynell Adams, a senior from Chicago, notched a season and career-high 34 points to help the Stars improve to 10-7 on the season and 3-6 in Sooner Athletic Conference play. Adams put on OCU's first 30-point performance since Charlton Jones' 31 vs. Oklahoma Baptist on March 1, 2012 in the SAC Tournament.
“Troy is always a capable scorer, but it just happened to be one of those nights where he was on,” OCU coach Dionne Phelps said. “We've seen nights where he has gotten the same shots and been off a couple of times, but I have a lot of confidence in him and his teammates have a lot of confidence in him that when he's open he can knock down shots.”
Adams hit back-to-back 3-pointers early in the first half to spark a 14-3 Stars' run and give OCU a 24-12 lead with 12 minutes and 19 seconds to play in the period. Jones capped the run with an old-fashioned 3-point play.
At the 9:08 mark, Juhreece Thompson scored in the paint to cut OCU's lead to nine points, but the Stars answered with a 12-1 run to push their lead to 40-20. Adams threw down a dunk in transition and buried a 3-pointer to give OCU a 20-point lead with 2:11 on the clock.
Wayland Baptist scored back-to-back buckets in the paint before halftime to make the score 40-24 at the break.
OCU shot 53 percent from floor while holding the Pioneers to 37 percent shooting in the first half. The Stars scored eight points off seven turnovers and only gave the ball away three times in the frame.
Terrence Walker helped the Stars maintain a double-digit lead in the second half with two straight baskets in the paint to make the score 46-28 at the 14:45 mark.
The Pioneers responded with seven unanswered points to cut the OCU lead to 11 points with 10:55 remaining.
Shawn Grant hit a 3-pointer to break the scoreless streak and send OCU on a 10-2 run. Jones tallied four points in the paint to fuel the run and make the score 56-37 in favor of the Stars.
The Stars shot 15-of-17 from the free throw line in the final three minutes to ice the game and give OCU the 75-53 victory.
OCU notched 10 second-chance points and outrebounded the Pioneers 42-34 on the night. The Stars' defense forced 18 turnovers and held Wayland Baptist to 35 percent from the floor.
“The thing that stands out the most is that we outrebounded them,” Phelps said. “I think the last time we played, they outrebounded us by 19. That says a lot about our guys' toughness.”
Adams led the way with 34 points on 10-of-15 from the field and 11-of-11 from the charity stripe. Jones stuffed the stat sheet with 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists, and Walker added nine points and four rebounds while shooting 100 percent from the floor.
The Stars will return to action against Lubbock Christian (Texas) at 2 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
