OCU vs. Mid-America Christian women's basketball preview

Stars seek to stay undefeated in Sooner Athletic Conference play

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University continues Sooner Athletic Conference play with a mid-week matchup with Mid-America Christian.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students, while OCU students, faculty and staff are allowed into all regular-season OCU athletics events for free with their ID.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: OCU, ranked No. 4 in NAIA Division I women's basketball, topped Oklahoma Baptist 56-33 Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena. The win bumped the Stars to 14-2 overall, 6-0 in SAC play, and pushed their winning streak to 13 games.
Center Katie Hall led OCU with 14 points and 11 rebounds against the Lady Bison. The 6-foot senior from Hazleton, Idaho, notched her fourth double-double and her seventh double-digit rebound game of the season. Hall is first on the team in rebounds per game (9.0) and sits eighth in NAIA Division I in offensive rebounds per game (4.4).
Junior Autumn Huffman posted her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds. The forward from Midwest City, Okla., is second on the team in total offensive rebounds (33) and third on the team in rebounds per game (5.1). Huffman averages 7.6 points per contest on 47 percent shooting from the field.
Desiree Jeffries, a senior from Oklahoma City, pitched in with 10 points and five rebounds in the 56-33 victory. The 6-foot forward averages 11.1 points per game and leads the Stars with 3.5 assists per outing. Jeffries is ranked 17th in NAIA Division I in assist/turnover ratio averaging 1.9 assists for every turnover.
OCU leads NAIA Division I in scoring margin (33.8) and turnover margin (12.6) and is ranked in the top-5 in seven statistical categories. To see how the Stars stack up against the rest of the NAIA, click here.
The Stars moved to fourth in the latest NAIA Division I rankings. Defending national champion OCU has been listed in all 158 polls since 1999-2000. The Stars own national championships from 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2012. SAC coaches predicted OCU would finish third place in the Sooner Athletic Conference. OCU has won or shared the SAC regular-season crown 13 times – in 1987, 1988, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012.
OCU owns a 10-0 advantage in the all-times series against Mid-America Christian. The Stars topped the Lady Evangels 88-37 in their last meeting on Dec. 8, 2011 at Abe Lemons Arena.
 
ABOUT THE EVANGELS: Mid-America Christian topped John Brown (Ark.) 61-54 Saturday at Bill George Arena in Siloam Springs, Ark. The Lady Evangels enter the contest at 11-5 overall and 2-3 in SAC play.
Kourtni Williams paced Mid-America Christian with 13 points and five rebounds against John Brown. Williams leads the Lady Evangels and the SAC in scoring with 17.8 points per game.
Emily Schirmer notched 13 points on 60 percent shooting from 3-point range against the Lady Eagles. Schirmer averages 6.7 points per game and has shot over 50 percent from behind the 3-point line in her last three outings.
Sabrina McKinney pitched in 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor in the 61-54 victory. McKinney leads the SAC and is seventh in NAIA Division I with 5.6 assists per game.
The Lady Evangels are 12th in NAIA Division I in made 3-pointers per game (7.0) and 13th in turnover margin (4.8). Mid-America Christian was picked to finish eighth in the SAC by league coaches.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Latricia Trammell is in the midst of her first season as head coach of the Stars. Trammell returns to OCU after serving as Western State (Colo.) head coach the past five seasons. At Western State, Trammell had 13 all-RMAC selections, including the RMAC West Division freshman of the year and RMAC player of the year. Trammell was assistant coach at OCU from 2005-07. As an assistant at OCU, Trammell mentored the Stars' first WNBA draftee, Mariam Sy of the Washington Mystics, 10 all-conference choices, the SAC player of the year, SAC newcomer of the year and four all-Americans. Trammell also spent time as head coach at Midwest City High School and Denton Bill Ryan High School (Texas).
Roman Owen enters his third season as head coach of the Lady Evangels and owns a 38-41 record. Owen, a former assistant for the OCU men's program, scored a program-high 2,802 points and garnered the Pete Maravich Award playing for Southwestern Christian. He also leads the men's golf team at Mid-America Christian.
