Stars smack Wayland Baptist 84-64

OCU ended the game on a 14-2 run to move to 12-2 overall and 4-0 in SAC play

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Oklahoma City University powered past Wayland Baptist (Texas) 84-64 Saturday at the Hutcherson Center.
The Stars, ranked No. 6 in NAIA Division I women's basketball, only led by seven at halftime but closed the game on a 14-2 run to improve to 12-2 overall and 4-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
Junior Kayla MacKenzie paced the Stars with 17 points off the bench. Desiree Jeffries added 16 points, Jessica Lankston notched 14 points and Lauren Gober followed with 11 points and seven rebounds.
OCU and Wayland Baptist traded buckets early in the first half and the Stars held a one-point lead with 12 minutes on the clock.
A pair of Lankston free throws and an old-fashioned 3-point play from MacKenzie sparked the Stars to a 12-0 run. MacKenzie buried a 3-point jumper to cap the run and give OCU a 29-16 lead at the 8:32 mark of the half.
Laura Castillo hit a 3-pointer at the 3:57 mark to cut OCU's lead to single digits and send the Flying Queens on a 12-5 run. Wayland Baptist got a pair of free throws from Rochelle Norris to make the score 43-40 in favor of the Stars with 45 seconds remaining in the half.
Jeffries scored in the paint and Ravven Brown converted a pair of free throws to push the Stars' lead to 47-40 at halftime.
Wayland Baptist shot 71 percent from behind the 3-point line in the first half. OCU shot 63 percent from the floor but posted nine turnovers in the period.
OCU started the second half on a 9-3 run to push its lead to 13 points. Jeffries hit a 3-pointer and Autumn Huffman followed with a jumper to make the score 56-43 at the 16:12 mark.
After a Lankston 3-pointer put OCU on top by 16 points, the Flying Queens battled back and got back-to-back buckets from Christie Mooney to cut the Stars' lead to 70-62 with 6:03 remaining in the game.
The Stars responded with a 14-2 run to end the game and take the 84-64 victory. Katie Hall notched five points and MacKenzie added four points to fuel the run.
OCU scored 27 points off 22 Wayland Baptist turnovers and outscored the Flying Queens 25-14 in bench points on the game.
The Stars will return to action against Rogers State at 6 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
