OCU at Wayland Baptist women's basketball preview

Jessica Lankston is shooting 90 percent from the charity stripe and is fourth in NAIA Division I in free throw percentage.

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University takes on Sooner Athletic Conference foe Wayland Baptist (Texas) in the second of a two-game road trip in west Texas.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: OCU, ranked No. 6 in NAIA Division I women's basketball, toppled top-ranked Lubbock Christian (Texas) 79-68 Thursday at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Texas. With the win, the Stars improved to 11-2 overall and 3-0 in SAC competition.
Senior Desiree Jeffries was one rebound shy of a double-double with 19-points and nine rebounds against Lubbock Christian. The forward from Oklahoma City hit double-digit points for the eighth time and pulled five or more rebounds for the eighth time this season. Jeffries averages 11 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game and is 14th in NAIA Division I in assists/turnover ratio (2.2).
Center Katie Hall notched 17 points and eight rebounds against the NAIA's top-ranked squad. The senior from Hazelton, Idaho, is shooting 59 percent from the floor while averaging 11.9 points and 9.2 rebounds on the season. Hall is ranked 10th in NAIA Division I in offensive rebounds per game (4.2) and 20th in total rebounds per game (9.2).
Reserve-guard Ravven Brown shot 50 percent from floor and posted 11 points off the bench against the Lady Chaps. The senior from Duluth, Ga., averages 8.0 points per game and leads OCU in assists with 3.4 dimes per game. Brown is eighth in NAIA Division I in assist/turnover ration averaging 2.3 assists for every turnover.
The Stars are ranked first in NAIA Division I in scoring margin (34.6) and turnover margin (13.3) and sit in the top-10 in 11 statistical categories. To see how OCU stacks up against the rest of the NAIA, click here.
The Stars moved to sixth in the latest NAIA Division I rankings. Defending national champion OCU has been listed in all 157 polls since 1999-2000. The Stars own national championships from 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2012. SAC coaches predicted OCU would finish third place in the Sooner Athletic Conference. OCU has won or shared the SAC regular-season crown 13 times – in 1987, 1988, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012.
The Stars hold a 31-18 all-time record against the Flying Queens. OCU topped Wayland Baptist 89-48 in their last meeting on Feb. 9, 2012.
 
ABOUT THE FLYING QUEENS: Wayland Baptist defeated Mid-America Christian 84-73 Thursday at the Hutcherson Center. The Flying Queens enter the contest at 11-7 overall and 3-1 in SAC play.
Leading-scorer Angeleigh Davis posted 26 points and hit 10-of-13 from the charity stripe against Mid-America Christian. The 5-foot-9 guard averages 15.5 points per game and shoots 44 percent from the 3-point range.
Guard Christie Mooney added 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting off the bench in the 84-73 victory. The 5-foot-9 Mooney averages 8.5 points per game and leads the Flying Queens in steals with 1.67 per game.
LaTericka Anderson grabbed eight rebounds and posted eight points on 66 percent shooting. The 5-foot-10 forward leads the Wayland Baptist with 5.7 rebounds per contest.
Wayland Baptist is ranked fifth in NAIA Division I in 3-point percentage (0.37) 11th in total scoring offense (1,249) and 12 in total offensive rebounds (715). The Flying Queens were picked to finish seventh in the SAC by league coaches.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Latricia Trammell is in the midst of her first season as head coach of the Stars. Trammell returns to OCU after serving as Western State (Colo.) head coach the past five seasons. At Western State, Trammell had 13 all-RMAC selections, including the RMAC West Division freshman of the year and RMAC player of the year. Trammell was assistant coach at OCU from 2005-07. As an assistant at OCU, Trammell mentored the Stars' first WNBA draftee, Mariam Sy of the Washington Mystics, 10 all-conference choices, the SAC player of the year, SAC newcomer of the year and four all-Americans. Trammell also spent time as head coach at Midwest City High School and Bill Ryan High School (Texas).
Tory Bryant is in his sixth season at the helm of the Flying Queens program, posting a 95-80 record in his tenure. He led Wayland Baptist to the NAIA national tournament in 2009. Bryant led Lubbock Trinity Christian High School (Texas) to a 96-19 record and two state championships.
