Adams led Stars to 74-51 win over Wayland Baptist last seaon in Plainview, Texas

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University seeks to return to its winning ways on the road against Wayland Baptist (Texas) in the conclusion of the Stars' two-game Sooner Athletic Conference away swing in west Texas.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: Lubbock Christian (Texas) pinned an 81-71 overtime loss on OCU on Thursday in Lubbock, Texas. The Stars (8-3, 1-2 SAC) hit 51.9 percent from the field (14-for-27) in the first half, but managed to hit 1 of 6 shots from the field in overtime.
Charlton Jones, a 6-foot-1 senior from Katy, Texas, propelled OCU by scoring a season-high 25 points to go along with five assists and three steals. Jones went 7-for-7 from the free-throw line. Jones produces 13.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 6.9 assists and 1.46 steals a game.
Terry Johnson, a 6-foot junior from Chicago, pitched in 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field to reach 20 points for the third time this season. Johnson averages 15.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.46 steals a game. Troynell Adams, a 6-4 senior from Chicago, compiled nine points, six rebounds and two steals. Adams provides OCU with 12.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per contest.
OCU ranks sixth in NAIA Division I with 75.5 percent team free-throw percentage, while Jamil Donovan leads the nation with a 7.7-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. To see how the Stars rank among national statistics, click here.
The Stars remained 22nd in the latest national rankings. OCU owns six national championships won in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008. The Stars were picked to finish fifth place in the Sooner Athletic Conference in the preseason.
OCU has gone 38-9 against Wayland Baptist over the years. The Stars prevailed 74-51 over Wayland Baptist on Feb. 9, 2012 in Plainview, Texas in the last meeting between the two teams. Adams sparked OCU with 20 points, five rebounds and two steals.
 
ABOUT THE PIONEERS: Wayland Baptist rallied past Mid-America Christian 79-74 on Thursday in Plainview, Texas. Juhreece Thompson's free throws with 3:29 left put Wayland Baptist (11-6, 2-2) ahead after Mid-America took a 17-point lead early in the second period. Wayland Baptist had overcome a 17-point deficit in a 70-64 win over Texas Lutheran on Dec. 28 in Plainview, Texas.
Tanner Hazelbaker, a 6-foot senior, boosted Wayland with 20 points, three assists and two steals. Hazelbaker averages 12.1 points and 2.0 assists a game. Theo Hatcher, a 6-6 senior, had 17 points and eight rebounds. Hatcher records 9.2 points and 6.0 rebounds a game.
Wayland Baptist had been projected to finish seventh place in the SAC before the season.

ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps has led the Stars to a 20-18 record in his second season as OCU coach. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma, which featured future No. 1 NBA Draft pick Blake Griffin during his tenure. Phelps has been a part of four conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 23-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.
Matt Garnett has a 22-25 record since taking over as Wayland Baptist coach last season. Garnett led McMurry (Texas) to a 21-7 finish and the American Southwest Conference Tournament title in 2010-11. Garnett became an all-American playing for Wayland Baptist.
