OCU CRUSHES SIMON FRASER FOR NATIONAL TITLE

Lady Chiefs trounce Simon Fraser 72-55, hold Clan to 25 percent shooting

OCU's 1999 NAIA Division I women's basketball champion
JACKSON, Tenn. – Oklahoma City University rode stifling defense and tournament most valuable player Patty Cantella's 23 points to a 72-55 win over Simon Fraser (British Columbia) for the NAIA Division I women's basketball title Tuesday, March 23, 1999 at Oman Arena.
OCU held Simon Fraser to 25 percent shooting from the field and forced 21 turnovers by The Clan. Simon Fraser had only 5-for-34 shooting in the second half.
Sixth-seeded OCU (28-7) became the lowest seeded team to capture the national championship since unseeded UNC Asheville in 1984.
The Lady Chiefs' Mary Ogunsola added 16 points, while Taiwo Rafu recorded seven blocked shots, six in the second half.
OCU shot 51 percent from the field in the first half and 50 percent overall. OCU survived Cantella sitting on the bench for more than six minutes with foul trouble.
OCU's closest game during its run to the national championship was a 64-56 quarterfinal win over Union (Tenn.). OCU's other wins came by 30 points, 14, 17 and 17.
“To play five games together like this... I'm pleased, but a little overwhelmed,” OCU coach Kent Stanley said. “We played close to flawless.”
