OCU TAKES FIRST NAIA CHAMPIONSHIP

Ordonez's 38 points spark Lady Chiefs to 113-95 triumph

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Oklahoma City University set a tournament record for most points in a title game and captured the university's first NAIA national championship during a 113-95 shootout win over Claflin (S.C.) on Tuesday at Municipal Auditorium.
OCU's Patricia Ordonez had 38 points, hitting three 3s to erase a 59-59 tie. Elizabeth Hinestroza added 20 points as she and Ordonez were named all-tournament. OCU ended the season on a 10-game winning streak to finish at 28-6.
Janeth Torijano chipped in 16 points, and Denise Hannah had 14 points and 15 rebounds to become second-team all-tournament. Maria Arizala supplied 16 points.
Ordonez sank 8 of 14 3-pointers, including five in the second half. Ordonez hit three treys during a 3:40 span to key a 17-2 OCU run that erased a 59-59 tie. OCU had 16 unanswered points, 13 of them by Ordonez, for a 76-61 advantage.
The Lady Chiefs produced a 100-74 advantage for their largest lead of the game. OCU hit 13 3-pointers in the game.
“They came out the second 20 minutes and did what we expected them to do this year,” said OCU coach Bob Colon, who earned NAIA coach of the year. “We knew we had it. We had moments of brilliance during the season and the kids wanted this enough tonight to do it again.”
Fourth-seeded OCU upended second seed Claflin. Claflin had won 30 consecutive contests and and topped 100 points 18 times during a 37-1 season.
