Pitching keys OCU's 8-0, 9-1 sweep of Mid-America

LaVelle, Woodward toss one-hitters for third-ranked Stars

A.J. Woodward improved to 2-0 on the year Wednesday.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Lily LaVelle carried a perfect game through 4.1 innings in the first game of Oklahoma City University's 8-0, 9-1 twin-bill trouncing of Mid-America Christian on Wednesday at Jack Allen Field.
LaVelle, a senior from Bridge Creek, Okla., settled for her 10th career one-hitter. The Stars, ranked third in NAIA softball, improved to 10-1, 3-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
A.J. Woodward and LaVelle combined to allow two hits in 10 innings Wednesday. LaVelle struck out 12 in five innings, while Woodward, a senior from Menifee, Calif., struck out three and allowed one run on one hit and a walk.
In the first game, OCU plated four first-inning runs. LaVelle and Tori Joyner scored on Angela Lovelady's bunt, then LeeAnn Lopez pounded a home run to left-center field. Danielle Fox knocked in the Stars' fourth run.
Lopez made it 5-0 by driving in a run on a base hit to left in the second. In the fifth, OCU scored using Kylee Rounsaville's sacrifice fly, Fox's RBI double and Emily Krienke's pinch-hit RBI single.
LaVelle struck out the side in the second and third. LaVelle struck out seven in a row when she caught Tiffanie Sanchez looking leading off the bottom of the fourth.
Ashtin Simeroth led off the bottom of the fifth with a lineout to LaVelle, who retired 13 in a row. Ashlee Dodson's base hit broke LaVelle's string.
Lopez, a junior from Grand Prairie, Texas, went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Fox, a sophomore from Yukon, Okla., went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and two runs driven in.
In the second game, the Stars broke a 1-1 deadlock with an eight-run fourth. Jamie Rateliff provided the go-ahead run on a base hit to left. Joyner drove in another run on a single to center. OCU took advantage of three Mid-America errors to score four more runs. Lovelady added a run-scoring single, while Haley Anderson had a RBI double.
Mid-America took a 1-0 edge when Christian Reyes drew a walk, stole second then scored on Ashley Newman's base hit.
LaVelle drove in a run on a single to center to tie the game 1-1 in the third.
In the second game, LaVelle went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Joyner and Lovelady scored two runs each.
The Stars play next in the Friends Tournament on Saturday and Sunday in Wichita, Kan.
