Brown of OCU takes Jet Invitational crown

Five Stars place in Newman Jet Invitational

Michael Brown picked up his second open tournament title of the season Sunday.
WICHITA, Kan. – Michael Brown of Oklahoma City University nabbed the 197-pound Newman Jet Invitational championship, while Kidd Gomez finished as 125-pound runner-up and Zach Skates took the 165-pound runner-up Sunday at the Fugate Gymnasium.
Other Stars placing Sunday were Mark Meyer, fourth at 157 and Stanley Lattimore, fourth at 285. OCU is ranked 14th in NAIA wrestling.
Brown, a sophomore from Noble, Okla., won 3-1 over Tanner Kriss of Fort Hays State (Kan.) for the 197-pound title. Brown completed the weekend with three wins. Brown entered the tournament ranked fifth among NAIA 197-pounders, while Kriss was the sixth-ranked 197-pounder in NCAA Division II.
Gomez, a senior from Noble, Okla., pinned Evan Amaro of Wichita State in 1:23, then defeated Ryan Brooks of Central Oklahoma 9-0 to advance to the 125-pound final. Gomez, ranked 11th in the NAIA, defaulted in the championship match.
Skates, a redshirt freshman from Broken Arrow, Okla., notched a 20-5 technical-fall win over Clark Driz of Newman (Kan.), then nudged by Devin Aguirre of Labette (Kan.) 5-3 to make the 165-pound title match. Central Oklahoma's Chris Watson prevailed 6-2 for the title. Watson is ranked fifth in NCAA Division II, while Skates is rated third in the NAIA.
Meyer, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., posted his 59th career fall in 1:32 over Hunter Edwards of Pratt (Kan.) to add to his OCU record. Cory Dauphin of Central Oklahoma won 8-2 over Meyer in the 157-pound third-place match. Dauphin is ranked seventh in NCAA Division II, while Meyer is ranked seventh in the NAIA.
Lattimore, a senior from Athens, Ga., pinned Edward Fitzgerald of Pratt in 1:00. Lattimore dropped the third-place match 4-2 to Trey Page of Labette.
The Stars compete next in the Wartburg Desert Duals on Dec. 16 in Las Vegas. The event features top-ranked Grand View (Iowa) and third-ranked Great Falls (Mont.).
