Stars pound San Diego Christian 76-32

OCU picked up win No. 8 of the season in the GSAC Challenge

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Oklahoma City University pounded San Diego Christian (Calif.) 76-32 Saturday in game No. 2 of the GSAC Challenge at Murchison Gymnasium.
OCU, ranked No. 8 in NAIA Division I, picked up its second win in as many days to improve to 8-2 on the season. Junior Kayla MacKenzie paced the Stars' attack with a season-high 21 points.
OCU got a steal and a layup from Autumn Huffman to start the game and begin a 23-4 Stars' run. Forward Lauren Gober led the charge with eight points and a steal to put OCU on top 23-4 with 10 minutes and 32 seconds left in the first half.
A 3-point bucket from Chardonnay Shula stopped the run and cut the Stars' lead to 16. OCU forced nine San Diego Christian turnovers in the first 10 minutes of play.
Junior Cara Pugh hit a jumper with 3:42 remaining to stretch OCU's lead to 20. The Stars finished the period on a 13-5 run to take a 43-17 lead to the locker room at halftime. MacKenzie posted six points and Pugh added four to fuel the run.
The Stars shot 41 percent from the floor in the half while holding San Diego Christian to just 16 percent from the field.
The teams traded buckets early in the second half until MacKenzie buried a 3-point jumper at the 15:26 mark. MacKenzie's jumper sparked a 12-3 Stars' run to push their lead to 33 points. MacKenzie added back-to-back buckets to cap the run.
San Diego Christian's Brittany Daniel scored in the paint to end the run and make the score 60-29 in favor of OCU with 10:25 remaining.
After a Katie Hall bucket at the 8:29 mark, the Stars scored 11 unanswered points to stretch their lead to 43 with 2:25 to go in the game. OCU scored eight of its 11 points in the paint.
The Stars finished the game on a 13-2 run and picked up the 76-32 victory.
The Stars outscored San Diego Christian 30-6 in the paint and 38-11 in bench points. OCU scored 32 points off 26 turnovers and held the Lady Hawks to 16 percent shooting from the field.
MacKenzie led the way with a game-high 21 points. The guard from Peoria, Ariz., added four assists and three steals on the game. Gober followed with 17 points and seven rebounds and Pugh added 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
The Stars will open Sooner Athletic Conference play against John Brown (Ark.) at 6 p.m. Thursday at Bill George Arena in Siloam Springs, Ark.
