Stars smack Southwestern Adventist 85-63

OCU got a bucket from every player on the roster in the 22-point win

OKLHAOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University rocked Southwestern Adventist (Texas) 85-63 Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars got 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting from senior Charlton Jones to move to 5-1 on the young season.
OCU and the Knights traded baskets in the first half until Terry Johnson hit a jumper to send the Stars on an 11-0 run. Johnson fueled the run with four points including a fast-break dunk to give OCU a 19-7 lead at the 13:08 mark.
An and-one layup from Terrence Walker and layup from Jamil Donovan gave OCU its biggest lead of the half at 29-15 with 6:26 to play.
After Southwestern Adventist cut the Stars' lead to four at the 2:49 mark, Shawn Grant buried a 3-pointer and Elhadji Wade threw down a fast-break dunk to help OCU finish the half on a 7-1 run.
The Stars outscored the Knights 16-0 in the paint in the half to take a 38-28 lead to the locker room. Southwestern Adventist hit 7-of-15 from 3-point distance in the first half.
A 3-pointer from Kevin Squarzon at the 18:35 mark of the second half cut OCU's lead to 40-36. Jones countered with an and-one layup to stretch the Stars' lead to seven with 17 minutes remaining in the game.
A 3-pointer from Troynell Adams and back-to-back layups from Jones sparked a 21-9 run by OCU. Jones posted seven points and Adams notched five during the run. Grant ended the run with a 3-point jumper to put OCU on top 66-47 with 11:22 left to play.
Marquis Smith hit from 3-point range to cut OCU's lead to 14, but back-to-back buckets from Jones and Ivan Matip helped OCU maintain a double-digit lead with 7:52 to go in the half.
A fast-break dunk by Kaleb Smith and a 3-pointer from Grant capped the scoring and gave OCU the 85-63 victory.
OCU shot 54 percent from the field and 46 percent from behind the 3-point line on the game. The Stars scored 27 points off 22 turnovers and outscored Southwestern Adventist 34-12 in the paint.
Jones led the charge with a game-high 20 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Adams followed with 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor and Grant notched 12 points on 50 percent shooting from 3-point distance.
The Stars will return to action against Northwood (Texas) at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
