OCU picks up SAC road win over John Brown

Stars finish 1-1 on day after falling to 23rd-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – Oklahoma City University posted its second win in five-set matches this season 19-25, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22, 15-10 over John Brown (Ark.) on Saturday at the Bill George Arena.
The Stars also fell to nationally-ranked MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) 25-16, 25-21, 25-16 on Saturday. OCU went to 12-16, 3-3 in Sooner Athletic Conference volleyball.
OCU leveled its league record while building a 6-2 fifth-set lead. Tori Leisure's kill put OCU up four points before John Brown responded with five points in a row. John Brown tied the set 8-8, but Leisure responded with a kill that started a three-point run by OCU. Torrie Flynn and Meghan Irwin teamed on a block, then Irwin hammered a kill for an 11-8 OCU edge. Flynn secured the victory by nailing a kill.
The Stars forced the fifth set by overcoming a 12-9 deficit in the fourth. Flynn had back-to-back kills, then Irwin's kill tied the set 12-12.
Hannah Mitcham, a freshman from Fort Worth, Texas, recorded her first 50-assist match with 50 assists, 15 digs, four kills and three aces for the Stars. Irwin, a sophomore from Arlington, Texas, led OCU with 19 kills to go with four digs and two blocks.
Rachel Gabel, a freshman from Richardson, Texas, provided the Stars with 18 kills and nine digs, and Flynn, a junior from Edmond, Okla., produced 14 kills and three blocks.
Danielle Robison, a junior from Dallas, topped OCU with 16 digs and four aces, while Anna Gentry, a junior from Stillwater, Okla., added 14 digs. Kelley Shiels and Maggie Vickers each scooped nine digs.
Against MidAmerica Nazarene, Gabel and Irwin each had seven kills. Mitcham picked up 18 assists and five digs. MidAmerica Nazarene is ranked 23rd in the NAIA.
OCU takes on Southwestern Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
