Stars fall 91-42 to Baylor

WACO, Texas – Defending NAIA champion Oklahoma City University fell 91-42 to defending NCAA champion Baylor in an exhibition game Tuesday at the Ferrell Center.
Senior Lauren Gober, of Newcastle, Okla., posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Stars. 6-foot-8 Brittney Griner led Baylor with 16 points and seven rebounds.
After Baylor opened the game on a 19-2 run, Gober hit a jumper to end the run and spark the OCU offense.
At the 9:56 mark of the first half, senior Katie Hall, of Hazelton, Idaho, converted an old-fashioned 3-point play and made the score 21-7.
Junior Cara Pugh took a pass from senior Desiree Jeffries and scored at the 7:43 mark to cut the Baylor lead to 16.
Gober converted a pair of free throws just before halftime to make the score 47-15 in favor of the Lady Bears.
Junior Clara Russell, of Vancouver, Wash., hit a jumper to start the scoring in the second half. Fellow newcomer Jessica Lankston, a senior from Kansas, Okla., followed with a jumper to cut the Baylor lead to 53-19.
Junior Autumn Huffman made a free throw and senior Ravven Brown followed with a jumper to spark OCU to a 13-6 run at the 8:48 mark of the second half. Gober, Huffman and Pugh fueled the run with four points apiece.
Pugh took a pass from junior Tiffany Bellamy, of Anadarko, Okla., in the final minute of the game and hit a jumper to make the final score 91-42 in favor of Baylor.
Gober led the way with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Pugh followed with eight points and hall posted five points with nine rebounds.
The OCU defense held Baylor to 18.2 percent shooting from behind the 3-point line on the game.
The Stars will kick off their regular season against Evangel (Mo.) at noon Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
