OKLAHOMA CITY – No. 2 Oklahoma City University crushed USAO 108-42 Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Seven Stars scored in double figures to help OCU move to 17-1 overall and 11-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
“The strength of our team is the balance of our team,” OCU coach Rob Edmisson said. “When you look at the amount of kids that are scoring, we're rotating kids in off the bench and not dropping off and I'm really pleased with the effort.”
Senior Dietra Caldwell buried a 3-pointer to spark the stars to quick 9-0 lead to start the game. Fellow senior Lauren Gober converted a pair of free throws at the 14:35 mark of the first half to cap a 14-3 run for OCU.
USAO fought back and a Paige Pulliam layup cut the Stars' lead to 21-15 with 10:32 left to play in the first half.
Junior Desiree Jeffries responded with a fast-break layup and started OCU on a 21-5 run to take a 42-20 lead at the 2:45 mark. Senior Nicollette Smith fueled the run with six points.
Sophomore Cara Pugh converted a putback layup with less than 10 seconds to go and the Stars closed the half on a 10-4 run to take a 52-24 lead to the locker room.
The Stars shot 47 percent from the field and 31 percent from behind the 3-point line in the first half. Smith led the way with 11 points and Gober and sophomore Kayla MacKenzie followed with eight points each.
OCU outscored USAO 26-8 in the paint and outrebounded the Drovers 25-12 leading to 12 second-chance points.
The Stars picked up the defensive pressure in second half and scored four quick points off USAO turnovers to open a 28-2 run. Senior Tiffany Goldwire hit a jumper at the 9:42 mark to cap the run and give OCU an 80-26 lead. Goldwire scored seven points to help give the Stars a 54-point lead.
MacKenizie hit a 3-pointer at the 1:48 mark to put the Star over the century mark and make the score 102-40 and OCU cruised to the 108-42 victory.
The Stars shot 59 percent from the field in the second half, thanks in part to 24 fast-break points.
OCU scored 42 points off 34 USAO turnovers, and the Stars' bench outscored the Drover's bench 48-14.
Gober led the way for OCU with 19 points on 4-for-5 shooting from 3-point land. Senior Philicia Kelly followed with 14 points off the bench and fellow senior Taylor Booze added 13 points and eight assists.
Goldwire posted 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists and MacKenzie, Pugh and Smith added 11 points each. Caldwell finished with nine points, eight assists and six rebounds.
Every OCU player scored in the contest and the Stars reached 100 points for the 13th time in Edmisson's seven-year tenure.
“Our kids are becoming more comfortable, and you can see that with 30 assists, they're sharing the ball,” Edmisson said.” I like where we're headed and hopefully we can stay focused and keep doing what we are doing.”
The Stars will return to action against Oklahoma Christian at 6 p.m. Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
