OCU vs. Wayland Baptist women's basketball preview

Lauren Gober averages 11.5 points per game and shoots 34 percent from 3-point range on the season.

THE MATCHUP: Top-ranked Oklahoma City University looks to rebound from its first loss of the season as they square off against Sooner Athletic Conference opponent Wayland Baptist (Texas).
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students, while OCU students, faculty and staff are allowed into all regular-season OCU athletics events for free with their ID.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: The Stars suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of No. 12 Lubbock Christian on Thursday. OCU is now 14-1 overall and 8-1 in SAC play.
Forward Lauren Gober led the Stars with 17 points on the night. The sophomore from Newcastle, Okla., made five of 10 shots from 3-point range on the night and leads OCU in 3-point shooting at 34 percent on the season. Gober averages 11.5 points per game and is 17th in NAIA Division I in 3-pointers made per game at 2.4.
Leading-scorer Dietra Caldwell put up 12 points and added five assists and five rebounds against Lubbock Christian. The senior guard leads the Stars with 13.4 points per game and is fourth in the nation in assist/turnover ratio, averaging 3.5 assists to every turnover.
Junior Desiree Jeffries posted 10 points, six assists and five rebounds in the loss. The forward from Oklahoma City shot 62 percent from the floor and is second on the team in field goal percentage at 58 percent. Jeffries leads the team in rebounding, pulling down seven boards per contest.

The Stars hold the No. 1 ranking in the latest NAIA Division I poll. Five-time national champion OCU ranks among the leaders in wins in NAIA women's basketball over the past decade. OCU captured its 12th SAC regular-season title and reeled off its 13th consecutive 25-win season in 2010-11. The Stars have been favored to win the SAC championship in the preseason by league coaches.
OCU holds a 29-18 all-time record over the Flying Queens. In their last meeting the Stars rocked Wayland Baptist 97-61 at the Hutcherson Center in Plainview, Texas on Jan. 29, 2011.
 
ABOUT THE FLYING QUEENS: Wayland Baptist improved to 5-9 overall and 3-5 in SAC play with a 74-64 road victory over Mid-America Christian on Thursday. Leading-scorer Erika Raymond led the Flying Queens with 21 points and seven boards. Raymond averages 13.2 points per game and has scored 20 points or more three times this season.
Alex Williams added nine points, five rebounds and three assists in the win. Williams averages 10.4 points per game and leads the team in rebounds, 6.9, steals, 1.86, and blocks, 1.71, per game.
Guard Angeleigh Davis added 10 points and three assists off the bench against Mid-America Christian. Davis shot 57 percent from the floor in the 74-64 win and shoots 47 percent on the season.
Wayland Baptist is ranked sixth in NAIA Division I in 3-point field goal percentage, shooting 35 percent from deep. The Flying Queens were picked to finish sixth in the SAC in the preseason.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Rob Edmisson has posted a stellar 191-30 record in his seventh season at OCU and a 493-149 record overall in his 22nd season as a head coach. Edmisson, a two-time SAC coach of the year, has led the Stars to four SAC regular-season championships and four SAC Tournament titles. Edmisson coached the only player drafted into the WNBA from OCU, Mariam Sy, as well as six other Stars who have turned professional. He won 192 games at Hutchinson (Kan.) and 110 as a high-school coach in Kansas.
Tory Bryant is in his fifth season at the helm of the Flying Queens program, posting an 82-64 record in his tenure. He led Lubbock Christian to the NAIA national tournament in 2009. Bryant led Lubbock Trinity Christian High School (Texas) to a 96-19 record and two state championships.
