Lubbock Christian shocks OCU 88-66

Top-ranked Stars suffer first loss of season to No. 12 LCU

Desiree Jeffries tallied 10 points, six assists and five rebounds against Lubbock Christian.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Top-ranked Oklahoma City University women's basketball was handed its first loss of the season by No. 12 Lubbock Christian (Texas) 88-66 Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Three Stars scored in double figures, but Lubbock Christian shot 57 percent from the floor, 53 percent from 3-point distance and 90 percent from the free-throw line on the game to complete the upset.
The 22-point loss moves the Stars to 14-1 on the season and 8-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
Senior Lauren Gober hit a 3-pointer to kick the game off for the Stars, but Lubbock Christian answered with a 9-0 to make the score 9-3 at the 15:27 mark of the first half.
OCU countered with 3-pointers from senior Dietra Caldwell and Gober to tie the score at 12-12 with 12:06 to play.
Lubbock Christian answered again, going on a 13-4 run led by Brittany Roberts and Emily Atkins to take a 25-16 lead at the 7:35 mark of the first half.
The Lady Chaps maintained their lead and were up 12 with 1:03 to play, but back-to-back buckets from senior Nicollette Smith and junior Desiree Jeffries cut the lead to 43-35 at halftime.
Lubbock Christian outscored the Stars 18-12 in the paint, and shot 59 percent from the floor and 66 percent from 3-point range.
OCU shot 44 percent from the floor and scored 17 points off 10 Lubbock Christian turnovers.
The Lady Chaps outscored the Stars 13-0 from the free-throw line, making all 13 of their attempts. OCU did not attempt a free throw in the period.
The Stars opened the second half on a quick 5-0 run fueled by Caldwell and Jeffries and cut the Lubbock Christian lead to 43-40 with 18:55 on the clock.
That was as close as the Stars got to the lead as Lubbock Christian embarked on a 29-10 run to take a 72-50 lead at the 9:39 mark.
The Lady Chaps led by as many as 25 points in the half and cruised to an 88-66 victory. Five Lady Chaps scored in double figures.
The Stars were held to 31 percent shooting from the floor and 15 percent from 3-point distance in the second half. OCU only attempted eight free throws in the game while Lubbock Christian got to the line 32 times.
The Stars scored 22 points off 18 turnovers, but gave up 15 turnovers of their own. Lubbock Christian outscored OCU 38-28 in the paint and 29-5 from the free throw line.
Gober scored a team-high 17 points while shooting 50 percent from 3-point range. Caldwell added 12 points, five assists and five rebounds, and Jeffries posted 10 points, six assists and five rebounds.
The Stars will stay at home to take on Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
