OCU vs. Lubbock Christian men's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University seeks a Sooner Athletic Conference win against visiting Lubbock Christian (Texas).
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students, while OCU students, faculty and staff are allowed into all regular-season OCU athletics events for free with their ID.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: The Stars pulled off a dramatic 70-67 victory over John Brown (Ark.) at Abe Lemons Arena. Charlton Jones sank a jumper with seven seconds left to put OCU (8-4, 5-3 SAC) ahead 69-67, then Orlan Jackman rejected Andy Garcia's drive to the basket with 0.5 seconds left.
Jones, a 6-foot-1 junior from Katy, Texas, spearheaded OCU with 22 points, nine assists and two steals. He connected on 7 of his 10 shots from the field. Jones leads the Stars with 12.5 points and 6.1 assists a game.
Tim Morton, a 6-9 sophomore from Capital Heights, Md., collected 15 points and six rebounds while knocking in 6 of 7 shots from the floor. Morton chips in 12.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Shane Rogers, a 6-4 senior from Flower Mound, Texas, produced 14 points, six rebounds and two steals. Rogers averages 6.4 points and 3.2 rebounds a game.

The Stars received votes in the latest NAIA Division I rankings. OCU has been pegged to finish seventh in the SAC in the preseason.
OCU owns a 33-8 all-time record against Lubbock Christian. The Stars defeated Lubbock Christian 76-72 on Jan. 27 in Lubbock, Texas behind Jackman's 19 points in the last meeting.
 
ABOUT THE CHAPARRALS: Lubbock Christian throttled St. Gregory's 81-52 on Saturday in Lubbock, Texas. Lubbock Christian (7-7, 3-4 SAC) rode a 19-5 early lead en route to the win.
Rashad Sample, a 6-foot senior, topped Lubbock Christian with 18 points and five steals. He leads Lubbock Christian with 15.6 points and 6.5 assists a game. Douglas Williams, a 6-4 senior, added 16 points and 12 rebounds. He chips in 11.7 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.
SAC coaches predicted Lubbock Christian would finish 10th in the league in the preseason.

ABOUT THE COACHES: Dionne Phelps enters his first season as a head coach with OCU. Phelps took over the Stars after serving as assistant coach for Oklahoma. Phelps has been a part of four conference title teams as well as three NCAA Tournament teams during his 22-year coaching career. Phelps played for Texas Lutheran, eventually joining the Bulldog Athletic Hall of Fame.
Todd Duncan is in his first season as Lubbock Christian coach after serving 15 years as Lubbock Trinity Christian School (Texas) boys basketball coach and athletic director. He notched 400 wins and the 1999 state championship.
