Stars go 0-2 in final day of Embry-Riddle Tournament

OCU next plays in Baker Invitational on Sept. 9-10

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Oklahoma City University came up empty the second day of the Embry-Riddle Labor Day Tournament, falling in three sets to Northwestern Ohio and five sets to Daemen (N.Y.) on Saturday at the ICI Center.

Daemen won 24-26, 23-25, 25-13, 25-20, 15-13, while Northwestern Ohio prevailed 25-20, 25-22, 25-18. The Stars went to 4-4 in volleyball.

Against Daemen, Raissa Santos posted a career-high 22 kills to go with 24 digs to spearhead OCU. Santos, a senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, surpassed the 20 kills she had against John Brown (Ark.) on Oct. 19 at Abe Lemons Arena.

Danielle Robison supplied the Stars with 51 assists, 15 digs and three blocks, and Meghan Irwin chipped in 13 kills. Taylor Rowton contributed 11 kills and five blocks, while Victoria Cross racked up 20 digs. Anna Gentry scooped up 15 digs.

The Stars overcame a 10-4 first-set deficit. Santos tied the set 24-24 with a kill, then Cross knocked down a service ace to clinch the first set. Irwin nailed down two kills to bring up set point, then win the second set.

In the fifth set, Robison had a kill to put the Stars ahead 4-0. Santos' kill gave OCU an 8-5 edge, but Daemen rallied. Joanna Fretthold scored the final two points of the match on kills.

Against Northwestern Ohio, Robison had 23 assists and two blocks, while Cross contributed 17 digs. Torrie Flynn picked up eight kills and two blocks, and Rowton added seven kills. Alex Benbrook and Irwin each notched three blocks.

Flynn nailed a kill to cut OCU's second-set deficit to 24-22, but Heather Garmire answered for Northwestern.

OCU meets Benedictine (Kan.) at 3 p.m., then Baker (Kan.) at 7 p.m. Friday in the Baker Invitational at Baldwin City, Kan.
