OCU falls to Central Oklahoma in four sets

Stars rack up season-high 16 blocks

EDMOND, Okla. – Oklahoma City University tallied a season-high 16 blocks but fell to Central Oklahoma 25-20, 20-25, 25-13, 25-22 on Friday at Hamilton Field House.
The Stars (8-12) surpassed their previous season high of 15.5 against Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) on Aug. 27 at Abe Lemons Arena. OCU's total Friday became the second highest single-match number of blocks in program history.
OCU set its program record of 17 blocks at Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Nov. 7, 2007. Alex Benbrook, Meghan Irwin and Taylor Rowton notched a team-high seven blocks each Friday.
Raissa Santos, a senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, put together her 15th double-double of the year with 13 kills and 12 digs for the Stars. Benbrook, a senior from Enid, Okla., hammered 11 kills.
Danielle Robison, a sophomore from Dallas, registered 40 assists and nine digs, and Victoria Cross, a senior from Oklahoma City, picked up 18 digs for OCU. Anna Gentry, a sophomore from Stillwater, Okla., contributed 14 digs.
Irwin, a freshman from Arlington, Texas, and Rowton, a senior from Edmond, Okla., knocked down eight kills each.
OCU overcame 9-4 and 18-14 deficits en route to winning the second set. The Stars reeled off the final eight points of the set as Benbrook and Rowton teamed on a block to spark the run. Rowton provided OCU the go-ahead point with a kill, while Gentry chipped in a pair of aces, including one of the clinching point.
In the fourth set, Robison combined with Benbrook on a block and nailed a kill during a 4-0 OCU run that put the Stars ahead 17-15. Irwin pounded out a kill to give OCU its final lead of the match 18-17. Santos' kill cut OCU's deficit to 23-22, but Alex Richardson gave Central Oklahoma the final two points of the match with a pair of kills.
The Stars meet John Brown (Ark.) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
