OCU at Oklahoma Baptist men's basketball preview

OCU coach Kevin Morrissey became the Charles Stevenson hustle award winner in the NAIA Tournament as a senior playing for Oklahoma Baptist's 1997 national runner-up team.

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University meets Sooner Athletic Conference leader Oklahoma Baptist.

ABOUT THE STARS: OCU socked St. Gregory's 98-63 on Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena. The Stars (16-10, 9-9 SAC) reached 90 points for the fifth time this season with the aid of 56 points from OCU's subs.
Brandon Moton, a 6-foot-3 junior from Beaumont, Texas, put together 16 points and four rebounds. He nailed 6 of 10 shots from the field and 4 of 6 3-pointers. Moton records 12.7 points and hits 41.1 percent from 3-point range. The last six games, Moton has averaged 15.5 points and shot 55 percent from the floor.
Dee Proby, a 6-10 senior from Round Rock, Texas, scored 16 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Proby hit 6 of his 12 shots from the floor. Proby averages 13.5 points and 3.8 rebounds a game. Orlan Jackman, a 6-6 junior from London, and Kaleb Smith, a 6-5 freshman from Choctaw, Okla., each scored 13 points.

The Stars were unranked in the latest NAIA Division I rankings. OCU has been picked to finish fifth in the SAC according to league coaches. Six-time national champion OCU has captured the SAC regular-season crown 11 times.
OCU has a 61-47 lead in the series against Oklahoma Baptist. Oklahoma Baptist dealt the Stars a 73-64 setback Jan. 20 at Abe Lemons Arena. Nate Flowers had 16 points and 12 rebounds for OCU.

ABOUT THE BISON: Mid-America Christian notched its first win ever against Oklahoma Baptist 82-76 on Thursday in Shawnee, Okla. Oklahoma Baptist (20-6, 14-4 SAC) trailed by as much as 21 points, but sliced its deficit to six points midway through the second half.
Kevin Swinton, a 6-8 senior, rang up 28 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the floor. Swinton records 19.0 points and 7.7 rebounds a contest. Tim Bowman, a 5-11 senior, chipped in 16 points. Bowman adds 13.1 points and 3.5 rebounds a game.
Ninth-ranked Oklahoma Baptist had been projected to finish second in the league according to the preseason SAC coaches poll.

ABOUT THE COACHES: Kevin Morrissey has posted a 48-38 record in his third season at OCU. Morrissey spent the previous four seasons as St. Gregory's coach. He also has been an assistant at Missouri State and Texas-Pan American. Morrissey played his college ball at Oklahoma Baptist and Oral Roberts and high school at Bishop McGuinness in Oklahoma City.
Doug Tolin brought Oklahoma Baptist its first national championship since 1966 last season. Tolin has led OBU to a 301-78 record and 10 consecutive national-tournament appearances in his 11th season. Tolin's overall coaching record stands at 621-304 in 33 years as a head coach.
