OCU vs. John Brown women's basketball preview

K.J. Johnson contributed seven points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field in her first start of the season Saturday.

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University meets John Brown (Ark.) in a Sooner Athletic Conference showdown. This contest was originally scheduled for Thursday, but was moved to Monday due to inclement weather.
Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 students and free to OCU students, faculty and staff with their ID.

ABOUT THE STARS: Rogers State upended OCU 73-70 on Saturday in Tulsa, Okla. The Stars (19-2, 14-2 SAC) tied the game 62-62 on Emily Davis' free throws with 6:37 remaining in the game, but Angie Criner answered with a jumper to give Rogers State the lead for good.
Taylor Booze, a 5-foot-8 junior from Duncanville, Texas, led OCU with 16 points, nailing four 3-pointers. She sank a trey as time expired. Booze chips in 8.9 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists a game.
Donica Cosby, a 5-8 senior from Coldwater, Miss., added 13 points, three rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots. Cosby, a 2010 first-team all-American, averages 12.6 points, 2.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.05 steals per contest. Starr Fairbanks, a 6-2 senior from Cincinnati, contributed 11 points, four rebounds and two steals off the bench. Fairbanks compiles 11.7 points and 4.1 rebounds while shooting a team-high 61.9 percent from the field.
OCU have been ranked among the team leaders in NAIA Division I in field-goal percentage, average victory margin, assists per game, points per game, turnover margin and assist-to-turnover ratio. To see where OCU stacks up statistically in the NAIA, click here.
The Stars were second in the latest NAIA Division I rankings. SAC coaches placed OCU as the heavy favorite to win the league title. OCU has won or shared the SAC regular-season crown 11 times. Five-time national champion OCU entered the season tied for the most wins in NAIA women's basketball since 2000-01.
OCU have gone 30-4 against John Brown over the years. The Stars won 78-65 on Jan. 3 in Siloam Springs, Ark. Booze fueled OCU with 18 points, five rebounds and four steals.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN EAGLES: John Brown prevailed 81-61 over Mid-America Christian on Saturday in Siloam Springs, Ark. John Brown (18-6, 12-4 SAC) built an early 20-8 and a 38-24 halftime advantage en route to the victory.
Anna Parish, a 5-9 sophomore, served as John Brown's ringleader with 17 points, six assists and two steals. Parish averages 8.5 points, 2.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.29 steals a game. Chelsea Garrison, a 6-2 junior, put together 14 points and 10 rebounds Saturday. Garrison supplies 10.6 points and 6.0 rebounds a game.
SAC coaches predicted John Brown would finish eighth in the league in the preseason.  

ABOUT THE COACHES: Rob Edmisson has posted a stellar 169-28 record in his sixth season at OCU and a 471-147 record overall in his 21st season as a head coach. Edmisson, a two-time SAC coach of the year, has led the Stars to SAC regular-season championships three times and four SAC Tournament titles. Edmisson coached the only player drafted into the WNBA from OCU, Mariam Sy. He won 192 games at Hutchinson (Kan.) and 110 as a high-school coach in Kansas.
Jeff Soderquist is in his 14th season as John Brown head coach. Soderquist is the winningest women's coach in school history with 197 victories. He has also guided JBU to two NAIA Tournament appearances.
