OCU at Rogers State women's basketball preview

Tiffany Goldwire averages 6.6 points and 4.8 rebounds for the Stars.

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University looks to sweep Rogers State in the season series as the Stars travel to Tulsa, Okla.
The matchup has been moved from the Hillcats' standard playing arena, the Claremore Expo Center, due to continued inclement weather in the region. The game will be played at the Reynolds Center on the University of Tulsa campus, 3208 E. 8th Street, east of Skelly Stadium. There will be free admission for all game spectators.

ABOUT THE STARS: Oklahoma City University (19-1, 14-1) survived a double-overtime scare 108-107 using Donica Cosby's free throw with less than a second left Saturday at the Eagles Nest in the Backyard Brawl.
The second-ranked Stars got a season-high 29 points and six assists from Cosby, a 5-foot-8 senior from Coldwater, Miss. Cosby contributes 12.6 points, 4.3 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 2.15 steals a night for OCU.
Desiree Jeffries, a 6-foot sophomore from Oklahoma City, scored a career-high 28 points and added six rebounds in the contest. Jeffries adds 10.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists on average.
Tiffany Goldwire, a 5-9 junior from Oklahoma City, added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds for OCU. Goldwire nearly doubled her season averages of 6.6 points and 4.8 rebounds with her performance against the Eagles.
Lauren Gober, a 6-1 sophomore from Newcastle, Okla., chipped in 11 points. Gober leads the team with 13.7 points and 5.5 rebounds a night. She sits in eighth in the NAIA swishing 46.5 percent of her attempts from 3-point range.
OCU is tops in the NAIA with a 49.0 percent team shooting percentage and a scoring margin of 31.8 points a game. The Stars are second with 19.3 assists a night, a +9.7 turnover margin and a scoring offense that puts up 87.9 points a game. To see where OCU stacks up statistically in the NAIA, click here.
The Stars were second in the latest NAIA Division I rankings. SAC coaches placed OCU as the heavy favorite to win the league title. OCU has won or shared the SAC regular-season crown 11 times. Five-time national champion OCU entered the season tied for the most wins in NAIA women's basketball since 2000-01.
OCU owns a 8-0 all-time record against Rogers State. In their last meeting, the Stars took care of the Hillcats 87-72. Starr Fairbanks led the way with 25 points and seven rebounds in the New Year's Day game.
 
ABOUT THE HILLCATS: Rogers State (15-7, 9-6) returned to the hardwood after a nine-day hiatus due to inclement weather with an 85-52, win over St. Gregory on Tuesday afternoon at W.P. Wood Fieldhouse in Shawnee, Okla.
A trio of women led Rogers State with 15-point performances, and the Hillcats shot 54 percent from the field in the win. Hunter Peterson, Angie Criner, Candice Stewart all chipped in 15 points of offense. Peterson, a 5-7 senior, nearly doubled her season average of 8.5 points a game. Criner, a 5-7 junior, contributes a team-best 13.4 points per night to go along with 4.8 rebounds and 2.05 steals. Stewart, a 6-0 senior, averages 11.6 points and a team-high 7.5 assists for the Hillcats.
Cortney Crockett, a 5-7 senior, added 12 points for Rogers State. Crockett nets 12.9 points 4.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists nightly.
Rogers State was slated to finish seventh in the conference according to league coaches, but are holding on to the fourth spot heading into the final stretch of conference play.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Rob Edmisson has posted a stellar 169-27 record in his sixth season at OCU and a 467-145 record overall in his 21st season as a head coach. Edmisson, a two-time SAC coach of the year, has led the Stars to SAC regular-season championships three times and three SAC Tournament titles. Edmisson coached the only player drafted into the WNBA from OCU, Mariam Sy. He won 192 games at Hutchinson (Kan.) and 110 as a high-school coach in Kansas.
Amy Williams has a 67-50 record in her fourth season as the first women's basketball coach ever at Rogers State. Edmisson and Williams were on the same coaching staff at Oklahoma State.
