OCU at Rogers State men's basketball preview

Johnny Stephene posts 9.1 points, 2.4 assists and 1.8 rebounds a night.

THE MATCHUP: The Stars return to the road for a conference matchup with Rogers State in Tulsa, Okla., vying for a season split with the Hillcats.
The matchup has been moved from the Hillcats' standard playing arena, the Claremore Expo Center, due to continued inclement weather in the region. The game will be played at the Reynolds Center on the University of Tulsa campus, 3208 E. 8th Street, east of Skelly Stadium. There will be free admission to the game.
 
ABOUT THE STARS: The Oklahoma City University men's basketball team pulled off a 64-55 overtime win against Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at the Eagles Nest in the Backyard Brawl. The Stars owned the overtime period, outscoring the Eagles 13-4 and stretched their winning streak to four games.
The Stars (15-8, 8-7) had four players reach double-digit scoring in the grinder of a game. OCU was led by Dee Proby, a 6-foot-10 senior from Round Rock, Texas, with 16 points and five rebounds. Proby contributes 11.7 points, 4.4 rebounds a night. Nate Flowers, a 6-5 senior from Waldorf, Md., earned his 13th double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Flowers leads the Stars with averages of 13.0 points, 10.4 rebounds and 1.22 steals per contest.
Orlan Jackman, a 6-6 junior from London, put in 14 points and nine rebounds. Jackman posts 11.4 points and 5.3 rebounds for the Stars. Shane Rogers, a 6-4 junior from Flower Mound, Texas, added 12 points and six boards for OCU. Rogers helps the Stars with 7.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists on average.
OCU ranks fourth in the NAIA hitting 50.1 percent of its field goal attempts and racking up 17.8 assists per game. To see where OCU stacks up statistically in the NAIA, click here. The Stars were unranked in the latest NAIA Division I rankings. OCU has been picked to finish fifth in the SAC according to league coaches. Six-time national champion OCU has captured the SAC regular-season crown 11 times.
Rogers State owns a 5-3 all-time record over OCU. Last time out, the Hillcats took a 73-66 decision in a New Year's Day game at Abe Lemons Arena. Rogers led OCU in the loss with 15 points, six assists and three rebounds.
 
ABOUT THE HILLCATS: The Rogers State men's basketball team secured a crucial road victory over St. Gregory's on Tuesday afternoon as the Cats clawed their way to a 68-56 win at W.P. Wood Fieldhouse in Shawnee, Okla.
Rogers State (13-9, 9-6) was led by Chris Francis, a 6-2 senior. Francis put in a game-high and matched his career-high with 18 points for the Hillcats. Francis more than doubled his season average of 8.7 points per game.
Deveric Taylor, a 6-2 senior, finished with 17 points. Taylor averages a team-leading 16.9 points a contest to go with 3.1 rebounds. John Boyd added 17 points and 12 rebounds, his fifth double-double of the season. Boyd, a 6-5 senior, puts in 16.7 points a game and adds a team-leading 7.0 rebounds a night.
Rogers State was picked to finish seventh in the preseason coaches poll. The Hillcats are currently standing in sole possession of fourth place heading into the final weeks of the regular season.
 
ABOUT THE COACHES: Kevin Morrissey has posted a 47-34 record in his third season at OCU. Morrissey spent the previous four seasons as St. Gregory's coach. He also has been an assistant at Missouri State and Texas-Pan American. Morrissey played his college ball at Oklahoma Baptist and Oral Roberts and high school at Bishop McGuinness in Oklahoma City.
Justin Barkley elevated to the head-coaching position this season after serving as assistant coach for two seasons at Rogers State. He played on Northeastern State's 2003 NCAA Division II championship team and a state championship team at Inola (Okla.).
