Women's Basketball Stars improve to 8-0 on the season

OCU downs Benedictine 92-63

Tiffany Goldwire posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds against Benedictine.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University women's basketball rolled over Benedictine (Kan.) 92-63 Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked No. 1 in NAIA Division I, had four players score in double figures led by Dietra Caldwell, Lauren Gober and Tiffany Goldwire all with 16 points. With the win OCU improved to 8-0 on the season.
“Our balance is always there,” OCU coach Rob Edmisson said. “We don't have to have anybody score 25 points for this team to win. Our strength is that we have enough balance on any given day.”
The trio of Caldwell, Gober and Goldwire fueled a 13-2 run to begin the game and give the Stars an 11 point lead at the 16:44 mark.
After back to back 3-pointers from Kelsey Wolfe, Benedictine fought back with a 10-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 13-12 at the 14:00 minute mark of the first half.
The teams traded baskets until Gober hit a 3-pointer to spark a 15-3 run for the Stars. Philicia Kelly capped the run with a putback layup to put OCU up 48-28 with 1:52 to go in the half.
Kayla MacKenzie buried a 3-pointer with 12 seconds to go in the half, but Benedictine's Jackie Ziesel sunk a 3-pointer of her own at the buzzer to make the halftime score 53-35.
OCU scored 22 points off Benedictine turnover in the half and shot 48 percent from the floor to take the 18-point halftime lead.
Desiree Jeffries made a putback layup to begin the second half and put OCU up 20. The Stars maintained their double-digit lead for the rest of the half and led by as many as 29 to come away with the 92-63 win.
The Stars defense took advantage of 29 turnovers, scoring 39 points off of turnovers. OCU outscored Benedictine 44-24 in the paint and the OCU bench outscored the Benedictine bench 36-18 in the contest.
Caldwell, Gober and Goldwire led the way with 16 points each. Goldwire add 10 rebounds to post a double-double.
Kelly pitched in with 13 points off the bench, and MacKenzie and newcomer Nicollette Smith posted eight points apiece off the bench.
Benedictine forced 18 OCU turnovers and became only the second team to score more than 60 points on the Stars this season.
“We've got things to work on,” Edmisson said. “I guess the good thing is we're on game eight or nine but we still have things to do better at. Some of it is just being able to stay focused.”
The Stars will return to action in the Las Vegas Hoopla on Monday and Tuesday with games against Pikeville (Ky.) and Xavier (La.) at the Centennial Hills Community Center in Las Vegas.
“We fly out in the morning and play Monday and Tuesday, so it will be a quick turnaround,” Edmisson said. “We will have some tough games with traveling and it being the end of finals week.”
