OCU trounces Southwestern Adventist 72-28

OCU limits Southwestern Adventist to record-setting totals

Dionne Phelps picked up his first victory as a head coach Monday.
OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University posted a record-setting performance while giving Dionne Phelps his first win as a head coach in the Stars' 72-28 rout of Southwestern Adventist (Texas) on Monday at Abe Lemons Arena.
OCU (1-1 in men's basketball) allowed the fewest points ever in a half and a game in drubbing Southwestern Adventist. OCU led 42-10 at halftime.
LeTourneau scored 33 points against OCU on Dec. 1, 1990 for the previous OCU opponent low in a game in the modern era. OCU limited Oklahoma Christian to 15 points in a half during a 1992 contest.
Southwestern Adventist managed 23.8 percent shooting from the field, hitting 10 of its 42 shots from the floor. Southwestern Adventist missed its first seven shots from the floor and didn't score until 5:05 had passed in the game. Southwestern Adventist also went scoreless through the first 5:16 of the second half.
“For not having a game in a week, I was impressed with our guys' defense,” Phelps said. “Our guys were anxious to play tonight.”
C.J. Busby, a junior from Beaumont, Texas, topped OCU with 18 points, sinking five 3-pointers. Orlan Jackman, a senior from London, chipped in 16 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals for the Stars.
Tim Morton, a sophomore from Capital Heights, Md., contributed nine points, eight rebounds, four blocked shots and two steals, while Troynell Adams, a junior from Chicago, provided OCU with eight points and two steals. Charlton Jones, a junior from Katy, Texas, collected team highs with eight assists and four steals.
OCU downed 55.2 percent of its first-period shots, going 16-for-29 from the field. The Stars ended with a 50.9 percent shooting percentage. The Stars posted a 38-6 advantage in points in the paint and a 34-6 advantage in points off turnovers. Southwestern Adventist committed 29 turnovers as OCU pocketed 14 steals.
“You and I both know when C.J. gets an opportunity to shoot with his feet set, he will likely hit it,” Phelps said. “Tim is going to be a big factor for us. I was proud of how he established himself inside early. I hope this gives him confidence to do what we want him to do the rest of the season.”
OCU built its largest advantage of the game at 49 points with 2:45 remaining in the game. Sam Ferguson's lay-in put the Stars ahead 70-21.
Adams' layup put OCU ahead 17-2 at 11:37 left in the first half.
The Stars square off with North Texas at 7 p.m. Wednesday in an exhibition in Denton, Texas.
