OCU drops Missouri Baptist 35-6

The Stars got three pins and two major decisions en route to the victory

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University men's wrestling dispatched Missouri Baptist 35-6 Wednesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked eighth in the NAIA, posted three victories by fall and two major decisions as they moved past 11th-ranked Missouri Baptist. The dual started at 141 pounds. OCU moves to 2-2 in duals on the season.
Freshman Eric Waggoner got things going with an 8-7 decision over Jack Thornton at 141. Waggoner improved to 10-6 on the season after rallying to score six points in the third round.
At 149, junior Cameron Ream fell 9-8 to Martin Rubalcaba, ranked 10th in the nation at 141. Ream was outscored 3-2 in the third round and moves to 12-5 on the season.
Third-ranked Nik Turner pinned Robert Nickson in three minutes and 31 seconds at 157. The senior out of Norman, Okla., led 7-0 in the second round before the pin. Turner moves to 14-2 on the season.
Senior Kevin Hardy, ranked second, pinned Meldrick Woods in 1:27 at 165. Hardy scored his ninth pin of the season and moves to 13-2.
At 174, senior Derek Peperas defeated Andrew Carter by major decision 13-5 and moves to 15-0 on the season. Peperas, ranked seventh at 165, scored seven points in the third round to grab the major decision.
Missouri Baptist's Weston Keleher nipped seventh-ranked senior Andrew Pontikes 6-4 at 184. Pontikes moves to 5-5 on the season.
Freshman Cody Sivertsen defeated 10th-ranked Lucas Keene 9-6 at 197. Sivertsen moves to 7-9 on the season after scoring seven points in the third round to grab the decision.
At 285, freshman Michael Brown scored a 12-3 major decision against third-ranked Joe Kent. Brown outscored Kent in all three rounds and scored seven points in the third. Brown improves to 12-4 on the season.
Fifth-ranked Kidd Gomez pinned Joe Lamar in 0:49 at 125. The junior from Noble, Okla., recorded his fourth pin and moves to 11-3 on the season.
Freshman Matt Kennedy finished up for the Stars defeating Esmond Ford 4-3 at 133. Kennedy moves to 7-6 on the season.
"Our veterans wrestled really well,” OCU coach Archie Randall said. “What was impressive was how our freshmen got wins at critical matches. Matt Kennedy took down his guy with two seconds left to win. Eric Waggoner did the same thing. We're really proud of our freshmen.”
The Stars will return to action against Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 7 p.m. Nov. 30 at Abe lemons Arena.
