OCU outlasts St. Thomas 77-72 in overtime

The Stars hit late free-throws to win their first game in the Halo Classic

Cory Nicholson hit two late free-throws to put the game out of reach and give OCU a 77-72 win.
SAN ANTONIO – Oklahoma City University men's basketball outlasted St. Thomas (Texas) 77-72 in overtime of game one of the Halo Classic at Mabee Gymnasium in San Antonio.
Late free-throws by senior Orlan Jackman and junior Cory Nicholson put the game on ice for the Stars in overtime. With the win OCU moves to 2-1 on the young season.
The Stars trailed by as many as 14 in the first half, but a 3-pointer by senior Shane Rogers at the 5:33 mark sparked an 18-7 run by OCU and made the halftime score 39-39.
The Stars took their first lead of the game at the 18:12 mark of the second half when junior C.J. Busby hit from beyond the 3-point line to give OCU a 44-41 lead.
OCU lead for much of the second half until Anthony Medina of St. Thomas hit a 3-pointer at the 7:26 mark to tie the game at 58-58.
The Stars trailed by two with less than one minute to go when Jackman scored in the paint to tie the game at 67-67. Each team had a shot to take the lead in the final 30 seconds, but neither could take advantage sending the game to overtime.
In overtime, Jackman hit a jumper to give the Stars a 73-71 lead with a minute to go, and OCU made free-throws down the stretch to put the game away with a final score of 77-72.
The Stars had four players score in double figures led by Jackman with 17 points. Junior point guard Charlton Jones added 13 points with three assists, Nicholson chipped in with10 points and nine rebounds off the bench and Rogers put up 10 points and pulled down six rebounds.
The OCU defense allowed 50 percent shooting from the field and behind the 3-point line in the first half, but held St. Thomas to 33 percent from the field and 3-point range in the second half.
The Stars will face off against tournament host Our Lady of the Lake (Texas) at 4 p.m. Saturday.
