CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Cumberland (Tenn.) eliminated Oklahoma City University from the NWCA National Duals by edging the Stars 22-21 on Saturday at the UNI Dome.
The Stars, ranked 13th in NAIA wrestling, fell to 8-6 in duals on the season. Second-ranked McKendree (Ill.) knocked off OCU 37-12 in the first round, then OCU advanced with a 24-13 win over No. 14 Jamestown (N.D.).
Against Jamestown, James Brigance at 184 pounds and Johnson at 285 picked up pins for OCU. Johnson, a senior from Bethany, Okla., finished his match against Aaron Field in 42 seconds. Brigance, a freshman from Talihina, Okla., took 6:10.
Jake Mabry edged Raymond Mosley 5-4 at 197 as the Stars won their final three matches. Brigance's fall put OCU ahead 15-13.
Against Cumberland, Andrew Madden's 10-5 win over Andrew Pontikes at 174 made the difference. Madden put 11th-ranked Cumberland ahead 21-6.
OCU fought back as Brigance picked up the fall over Scott Stewart in 1:40. Mabry pinned Alexander Mott in 6:58 to cut the Stars' deficit to 21-18.
Johnson scored a 7-5 win over Bradley Rogers in sudden victory to tie the dual 21-21. Cumberland advanced on tiebreaker criteria. The two teams were even in matches won and pins.
The Stars continue their season 5:30 p.m. Wednesday against Central Baptist (Ark.) at Abe Lemons Arena. OCU also faces Baker (Kan.) at 8:30 p.m.
