LUBBOCK, Texas – Oklahoma City University suffered its first loss this season to Lubbock Christian (Texas) 68-67 on Thursday at the Rip Griffin Center in a meeting of top 25-ranked teams in NAIA women's basketball.
Emily Atkins provided the winning points by hitting free throws at 11 seconds remaining in the game. The second-ranked Stars fell to 17-1, 12-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. No. 25-ranked Lubbock Christian improved to 13-6, 10-3.
OCU's Donica Cosby, a senior from Coldwater, Miss., scored a game-high 14 points. Cosby missed a jump shot as time ran out. Desiree Jeffries, a sophomore from Oklahoma City, added 12 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Breezy Martin, a senior from Oklahoma City, had 11 points and four rebounds for OCU.
Cosby gave the Stars got their biggest lead at the 12:33 mark of the second half at 53-46. Cosby nailed a 3-pointer and two layups for a 7-0 Stars run.
Lubbock Christian erased that deficit with a 7-0 run of its own. Atkins' lay-in tied the game 53-53 with 9:47 left.
Renee Wilson's jumper put Lubbock Christian up 66-63 with 3:59 remaining in the contest. Jeffries answered for the Stars with a jumper with 2:50 left, then put OCU up 67-66 on a layup with 1:53 showing.
Martin gave the Stars a 36-35 lead at halftime. OCU rallied from a 31-25 deficit using Martin's free throws and Lauren Gober's trey. Taylor Booze's jumper put OCU up 34-33 with 29 seconds left in the period.
The Stars take on Wayland Baptist (Texas) at 1 p.m. Saturday in Plainview, Texas.
