OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University fell to Central Oklahoma 25-23, 19-25, 25-17, 25-11 on Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Xiaoting Ma, a senior from Dalian, China, posted a team-high 15 kills to go with 19 digs and two blocks for OCU. The Stars dropped to 1-3.
Samantha Ball, a junior from Edmond, Okla., handed out 31 assists and picked up 10 digs and two aces for the Stars, while Alex Benbrook added nine kills and three blocks.
Raissa Santos recorded five kills and 11 digs, and Victoria Cross scooped up 10 digs.
In the first set, Central Oklahoma used Kristen Wilson's kill and Fleming Smurthwaite's block to get to set point at 24-22. Wilson put away the set on a kill.
In the second frame, OCU erased a 16-16 tie as Ball and Benbrook combined on a block. Benbrook added a kill as the Stars scored three points in a row for a 19-16 edge. The Stars made it to set point on Torrie Flynn's block, which followed Ma's and Flynn's kills. Ma knocked down the decisive kill in the second set.
Zuela Adom had back-to-back kills to put Central Oklahoma ahead 15-12, then the Bronchos added another point for a 16-12 third-set advantage. Wilson put down consecutive kills to give Central Oklahoma a 24-17 edge, then Central Oklahoma had a block to win the set.
Central Oklahoma reeled off a 7-0 run en route to clinching the match in the fourth set.
The Stars meet William Jewell (Mo.) at 1 p.m. Friday in the Baker Invitational at Baldwin City, Kan. OCU also faces Baker (Kan.) at 7 p.m. Friday.
