OCU falls in five sets to John Brown

John Brown halts Stars' seven-match win string

Raissa Santos put together her fourth double-double of the year for OCU with 10 kills and 16 digs Thursday.

SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – John Brown (Ark.) snapped Oklahoma City University's seven-match winning streak, winning 20-25, 25-16, 19-25, 25-19, 15-9 on Thursday at Bill George Arena.

Xiaoting Ma, a senior from Dalian, China, posted 19 kills and 13 digs for the Stars. OCU fell to 9-5, 2-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

In the fifth set, John Brown (10-7, 2-1 SAC) built a 6-2 lead, but OCU rallied. Taylor Rowton and Alex Benbrook knocked down back-to-back kills to cut the Stars' deficit to 8-7.

John Brown responded as Erin Didier and Allie Rankin notched kills. Didier's kill brought up match point, then Stacie Williamson had the match-clinching kill.

Raissa Santos, a junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, tallied 10 kills and 16 digs for OCU. Victoria Cross, a junior from Oklahoma City, picked up 17 digs, while Vicky Murphy, a junior from Spring, Texas, had 26 assists, eight kills and seven digs for the Stars.

Alex Benbrook added nine kills and three blocks, while Torrie Flynn chipped in nine kills and three aces for OCU. Taylor Rowton had eight kills and three blocks, and Danielle Robison rang up 22 assists and two aces.

In the third set, OCU scored three points in a row to create an 11-7 cushion. Ma and Murphy each contributed kills for OCU in that span. Murphy's kill brought up set point, then Benbrook put away the frame for the Stars.

OCU faces St. Gregory's at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Shawnee, Okla.
