OCU picks up 3-2, 7-2 wins over Oklahoma Christian

Katie Proffitt had a pinch-hit single in the second game Thursday.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University ran its win streak to 15 with a 3-2, 7-2 doubleheader sweep of Oklahoma Christian on Thursday at Oklahoma Christian.

The Stars, ranked ninth in NAIA softball, moved to 29-7, 26-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Oklahoma Christian (20-25, 9-17) had split a twin bill with Baylor on Tuesday.

LeeAnn Lopez provided the difference in the first game for the Stars. Lopez, a redshirt freshman from Grand Prairie, Texas, pounded an RBI double to left field to put OCU up 3-0.

Oklahoma Christian rallied for a couple of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Kayla Jennings drove in a run on a base hit and eventually scored on an error. Amy Urbanovsky had a base hit, but got thrown out for the second out of the inning. Then Deidre Chatigny had a flyout to end the sixth.

Lily LaVelle worked a 1-2-3 seventh to make OCU's lead stand. LaVelle, a sophomore from Bridge Creek, Okla., fanned seven in a complete-game effort. She improved to 14-2 this year.

Laurin Hess, a senior from Edmond, Okla., was 2-for-3 with a run scored for OCU. Kelby Roberson, a freshman from Washington, Okla., went 2-for-4 and scored a run.

In the second game, Hess hammered a grand slam over the left-field fence in the fifth to put OCU up 7-0.

LaVelle drove in a run in the first on a single to center, then nailed a two-run homer to left in the third.

Hess was 2-for-4 with four RBIs, and LaVelle went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Amanda Howard went 1-for-4 and scored two runs, and Autumn Mayberry went 1-for-2 and scored twice for OCU.

Jenni Gaby worked five innings and struck out three to pick up the victory. Ashley Wilburn threw the final two innings.

The Stars take on Oklahoma Baptist in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday in Shawnee, Okla.
