OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University posted a 9-0, 7-0 doubleheader sweep of Oklahoma Christian on Tuesday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
Lily LaVelle, a sophomore from Bridge Creek, Okla., and Ashley Wilburn, a senior from Gilmer, Texas, recorded shutouts for OCU. The Stars, ranked third in NAIA softball, improved to 8-6, 5-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Wilburn allowed four hits and two walks in five innings in the first game. Wilburn (3-3) fanned seven.
In the second inning, Oklahoma Christian's Ashley Calles reached base on a walk, and Michelle Miller had a base hit to right field to advance Calles to third base. Wilburn responded by striking out Kayla Jennings to snuff out the Oklahoma Christian threat.
The Stars put five runs on the scoreboard in the first. Nathalie Timmermans socked a base hit along the left-field foul line to drive home one run, and Wilburn doubled to left-center to plate two more. Laurin Hess added an RBI double, then LeeAnn Lopez knocked in another run on a double to left.
Timmermans added a sacrifice fly in the third, and Amanda Howard reached home on a wild pitch.
LaVelle stole home, and Autumn Mayberry scored on a passed ball in the fourth.
Timmermans, a sophomore from Oldenzaal, Netherlands, had two RBIs, while Wilburn drove in two runs. Hess, Lopez and Timmermans each went 1-for-2.
In the second game, LaVelle allowed five hits and no walks in seven innings. She struck out eight Oklahoma Christian batters.
In the first, Amber Canady of Oklahoma Christian reached on a hit by pitch, then got to third on Amy Urbanovsky's single. LaVelle (5-3) struck out Calles to end the inning.
In the bottom of the first, Mayberry brought in OCU's first run of the second game on a double to right. Alicia Clifton scored on an Oklahoma Christian error.
LaVelle pounded a two-run double down the left-field line in the fourth. Howard cranked her second home run of the year over the left-center wall.
OCU made it 7-0 on an Oklahoma Christian error in the sixth.
LaVelle was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Mayberry was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Howard went 2-for-3, and Hess was 1-for-2 with a run scored.
The Stars meet Bemidji State (Minn.) at 4 p.m., then Missouri-St. Louis at 8 p.m. Friday in the Pittsburg State Invitational in Pittsburg, Kan.
