JOPLIN, Mo. – Oklahoma City University split a pair of games in the Terri Mathis Zenner Memorial Tournament on Sunday.
OCU, ranked third in NAIA softball, pounded Missouri Western 9-2 before losing to Northwest Missouri 9-4. The Stars moved to 6-6.
Against Missouri Western, OCU banged out 10 hits. The Stars jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings.
Ashley Wilburn had an RBI single, and Jen Davis nailed a three-run home run to left-center field in the first inning.
In the second, Lily LaVelle doubled, then scored on an error. Nathalie Timmermans added a sacrifice fly.
LeeAnn Lopez tacked on an RBI single, and Kelby Roberson drove in two on a base hit in the seventh.
LaVelle, a sophomore from Bridge Creek, Okla., fanned 11 and held Missouri Western to one earned run on eight hits to earn the win.
Against Northwest Missouri, OCU scored twice in the first on Timmermans' base hit and Wilburn's sacrifice fly. LaVelle smashed a two-run blast over the left-field fence in the seventh.
Northwest Missouri tallied seven runs in the fifth.
OCU meets Oklahoma Christian in a 2 p.m. doubleheader Tuesday at Ann Lacy Stadium.
