OCU vs. Oklahoma Baptist women's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University collides with Oklahoma Baptist in a top-10 battle for the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament championship.

OCU has won SAC Tournament crowns in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2009. OCU has made the tournament title game 10 years in a row.

Single-game tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Tournament passes are $35 for adults and $15 for students.

ABOUT THE STARS: OCU rallied for a 79-77 victory in overtime over Lubbock Christian (Texas) on Friday in the semifinals of the SAC Tournament. OCU won its 22nd consecutive game to improve to 28-3 on the year.

The Stars took the lead for good with a 6-0 run in overtime to push out to a 69-65 lead. OCU made all 10 of its free-throw attempts in overtime to seal the victory.

The Stars rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second half. OCU took its first lead at 63-61 on a jumper from Donica Cosby with 40 seconds remaining in the game.

Cosby, a 5-foot-8 junior from Coldwater, Miss., paced OCU with 30 points and leads the team 14.5 points a game.

Chontaye Walter, a 5-8 senior from Oklahoma City, had 14 points, three assists and two steals. Walter totals 8.5 points and leads the team with 4.0 assists per game. K.J. Johnson, a 6-2 junior from Portland, Ore., notched double figures for the second straight game with 11 points and six rebounds. Lauren Gober, a 6-1 freshman from Newcastle, Okla., had 10 points and two steals. Gober averages 10.6 points and 4.2 rebounds.

As a team, OCU ranks in the top 10 nationally in field-goal percentage (46.5), assists (17.9 a game and 520 total), average margin of victory (18.8), points (2,265) and points per game (78.1).

OCU assured itself of a national tournament berth by advancing to the conference tournament championship game.

OCU reached its 11th consecutive SAC Tournament final.

The Stars finished sixth in the final NAIA Division I rankings. SAC co-champion OCU has won or tied for the league title 11 times. The Stars entered this season tied for the most wins of any women's basketball program in the nation over the past nine years.

OCU has gone 38-21 against Oklahoma Baptist over the years. The two teams split the two regular-season meetings with OBU winning 72-64 in overtime on Dec. 3 in Shawnee, and OCU taking a 68-60 decision on Jan. 23 at Abe Lemons Arena.

 

ABOUT THE LADY BISON: Oklahoma Baptist punched its ticket to the SAC championship game with an 87-75 victory over Rogers State on Friday. OBU (30-2) used a 12-0 run midway through the second half to pull away. The Lady Bison shot 75 percent from the field in the second half.

Taujhnae Travis, a 5-7 senior, led OBU with 25 points. Travis, the SAC player of the year, averages 16.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. Gabrielle Mattox added 13 points, while Amy Pryor had 12. Mattox, a 5-11 junior, records 11.8 points and 5.9 rebounds.

OBU finished the season ranked fourth in NAIA Division I.

 

ABOUT THE COACHES: Rob Edmisson has posted a stellar 148-25 record in his fifth season at OCU and a 443-144 record overall in his 20th season as a head coach. Edmisson has led the Stars to SAC regular-season championships twice and the SAC Tournament title three times. Edmisson coached the only player drafted into the WNBA from OCU, Mariam Sy. He won 192 games at Hutchinson (Kan.) and 110 as a high-school coach in Kansas.

John McCullough has posted a 244-93 record in his 10th season as Oklahoma Baptist coach, 279-162 overall as a head coach. McCullough has led Oklahoma Baptist to nine consecutive national-tournament appearances, including the NAIA semifinals last season.
