OCU vs. Lubbock Christian women's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University takes on Lubbock Christian (Texas) in the semifinals of the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament.

OCU has won SAC Tournament crowns in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2009. OCU has made the tournament title game 10 years in a row.

Single-game tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Tournament passes are $35 for adults and $15 for students.

ABOUT THE STARS: OCU edged Southern Nazarene 75-74 on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the SAC Tournament in Bethany, Okla. Lauren Gober hit the game-winning shot with 5.3 seconds left to give the Stars (27-3) their 21st consecutive victory.

OCU trailed 68-59 with 4:40 remaining in the game before rallying for the victory. The Stars went on a 7-0 run capped by a free throw from Laura Duncan to take a 71-70 lead with 1:47 left in the game.

With SNU leading 72-71, Chontaye Walter hit a layup to give OCU the lead back with 31.8 seconds remaining. Lana Keith put SNU back in front with a bucket with 21.2 seconds on the clock, setting up Gober's game-winner.

Gober, a 6-foot-1 freshman from Newcastle, Okla., totaled 17 points, three assists and four steals to lead OCU. Gober averages 10.6 points a game. Starr Fairbanks, a 6-2 junior from Cincinnati, had 17 points and five rebounds. Fairbanks chips in 13.0 points and 4.5 rebounds.

Duncan, a 5-8 senior from Edmond, Okla., scored 14 points, including 4-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. Duncan averages 7.8 points and is seven points shy of reaching 1,000 points for her OCU career. K.J. Johnson, a 6-2 junior from Portland, Ore., added a season-high 13 points. Donica Cosby, a 5-8 junior from Coldwater, Miss., leads OCU in scoring with 14.0 points a game.

As a team, OCU ranks in the top 10 nationally in field-goal percentage (46.5), assists (17.9 a game and 520 total), average margin of victory (18.8), points (2,265) and points per game (78.1).

The Stars finished sixth in the final NAIA Division I rankings. SAC co-champion OCU has won or tied for the league title 11 times. The Stars entered this season tied for the most wins of any women's basketball program in the nation over the past nine years.

OCU has a 33-6 all-time record against Lubbock Christian. The Stars blitzed Lubbock 84-62 on Feb. 27 to close out the regular season. Fairbanks and Holly Hardin topped OCU with 22 points each.

 

ABOUT THE LADY CHAPS: Lubbock Christian rallied for a 68-64 victory over rival Wayland Baptist (Texas) in the quarterfinals of the SAC Tournament on Thursday in Bethany, Okla. Lubbock (20-9) iced the game with a pair of free throws from Severyn Smith with 9.2 seconds left.

Brittany Hampton scored 21 points, including a 12-of-14 performance at the free throw line, to lead the Lady Chaps. Hampton leads the team with 11.3 points and 3.4 assists. Smith poured in 13 points and totals 9.1 points per game.

Lubbock was ranked 23rd in the final NAIA Division I poll.

ABOUT THE COACHES: Rob Edmisson has posted a stellar 147-25 record in his fifth season at OCU and a 442-144 record overall in his 20th season as a head coach. Edmisson has led the Stars to SAC regular-season championships twice and the SAC Tournament title three times. Edmisson coached the only player drafted into the WNBA from OCU, Mariam Sy. He won 192 games at Hutchinson (Kan.) and 110 as a high-school coach in Kansas.

Steve Gomez has won more often than any other Lubbock Christian women's basketball coach. Gomez has a 152-74 record in his seventh season guiding Lubbock Christian.
