OCU vs. Campbellsville women's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP:
Oklahoma City University meets Campbellsville (Ky.) in the quarterfinals of the 30th annual NAIA Division I women's basketball tournament.

OCU won national championships in 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 and advanced to the finals in 2003, 2004 and 2005. OCU has qualified for 16 NAIA Tournaments, 13 in a row.

ABOUT THE STARS: OCU blew away Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) 87-59 on Friday at Oman Arena. The Stars (31-3)
increased their win streak to 25 by sinking 29 of 32 free throws.

Starr Fairbanks, a 6-foot-2 junior from Cincinnati, established a new career high with 25 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Fairbanks scores 13.4 points and hauls in 4.5 rebounds a game. Fairbanks leads the team with a 58.7 percent field-goal percentage.

Laura Duncan, a 5-8 senior from Edmond, Okla., posted 13 points, hitting three 3-pointers. Duncan, who has 1,024 career points, contributes 7.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.59 steals. K.J. Johnson, a 6-2 junior from Portland, Ore., came off the bench to add 12 points and nine rebounds. Johnson averages 4.8 points and 2.5 rebounds a game.

Donica Cosby, a 5-8 junior from Coldwater, Miss., leads OCU with 14.1 points, 4.0 assists and 2.00 steals a contest.

The Stars finished sixth in the final NAIA Division I rankings. SAC co-champion OCU has won or tied for the league title 11 times. The Stars entered this season tied for the most wins of any women's basketball program in the nation over the past nine years.

OCU has gone 6-1 against Campbellsville over the years. OCU is 1-1 vs. Campbellsville in national-tournament games. The Stars won the last meeting 67-55 on Dec. 29, 2006 in the Las Vegas NAIA Shootout.


ABOUT THE LADY TIGERS: Campbellsville used a second-half surge to oust Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) 75-57 on Friday at Oman Arena. Campbellsville (33-2) outscored Trevecca 41-26 in the second half and reeled a 17-4 run in the second period.

Whitney Ballinger, a 6-3 junior, totaled 18 points and 12 rebounds for Campbellsville. Ballinger averages 22.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.85 blocked shots and 2.24 steals a game. Courtney Danis, a 5-9 junior, recorded 18 points and 11 rebounds. Danis chips in 12.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.

 

ABOUT THE COACHES: Rob Edmisson has posted a stellar 149-25 record in his fifth season at OCU and a 451-144 record overall in his 20th season as a head coach. Edmisson, a two-time SAC coach of the year, has led the Stars to SAC regular-season championships three times and three SAC Tournament titles. Edmisson coached the only player drafted into the WNBA from OCU, Mariam Sy. He won 192 games at Hutchinson (Kan.) and 110 as a high-school coach in Kansas.

Ginger Colvin has guided Campbellsville, her alma mater, to a 78-22 record in her third season at the helm. Colvin was named Mid-South Conference coach of the year in 2009 as well as Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player of the year in 1990.
