OCU sinks Lewis-Clark State 87-59 in NAIA women's tourney

Laura Duncan scored 13 points while hitting three 3-pointers Friday.

JACKSON, Tenn. – Oklahoma City University crushed Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) 87-59 on Friday at Oman Arena to move into the NAIA Divison I women's basketball quarterfinals.

Starr Fairbanks, a junior from Cincinnati, spearheaded OCU with a career-high 25 points to go with seven rebounds. The top-seeded Stars picked up their 25th consecutive victory, improving to 31-3. Sixth-ranked OCU meets Campbellsville (Ky.) at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oman Arena.

Four Stars reached double figures in scoring. Laura Duncan, a senior from Edmond, Okla., added 13 points and four rebounds, while K.J. Johnson, a junior from Portland, Ore., chipped in 12 points and nine boards. Chontaye Walter, a senior from Oklahoma City, had 10 points.

The Stars knocked down 29-of-32 from the free-throw line. Walter went 6-for-6 from the line, while Duncan, Johnson and Holly Hardin each dropped in all four of their free-throw attempts.
Johnson led OCU's reserves as the Stars forged a 27-17 advantage in bench points.

“We were really good from the free-throw line,” OCU coach Rob Edmisson said. “It was great team play. We found ourselves in foul trouble, and our bench really came through.”

OCU flexed its inside muscle, outscoring Lewis-Clark 42-28 in points in the paint. Fairbanks sank 9 of 13 shots from the floor, while Johnson hit 4-of-7.

Fairbanks had 19 points by halftime as OCU led 38-25. The Stars led 15-12 before reeling off a 21-7 run.

Lewis-Clark State managed 32.2 percent shooting from the floor and committed 25 turnovers. No. 13-ranked Lewis-Clark State ended its season 29-6.
