OCU vs. Lewis-Clark State women's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP:
Oklahoma City University faces Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) in the round of 16 aiming to advance in the 30th NAIA Division I women's basketball national tournament.

OCU won national championships in 1988, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 and advanced to the finals in 2003, 2004 and 2005. OCU has qualified for 16 NAIA Tournaments, 13 in a row.

ABOUT THE STARS: OCU eliminated Shorter (Ga.) 71-49 on Wednesday at Oman Arena. The Stars (30-3)
recorded OCU's ninth 30-win season in 12 years and ran their win streak to 24. OCU scored 36 points in the paint.

Starr Fairbanks, a 6-foot-2 junior from Cincinnati, matched her season high by scoring 22 points to go with five rebounds. Fairbanks averages 13.0 points and 4.5 rebounds a game. Fairbanks leads the team with a 58.2 percent field-goal percentage.

Holly Hardin, a 6-foot senior from Chickasha, Okla., logged 20 points and six rebounds. Hardin, a 2009 all-American, records 12.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.16 blocks and 1.13 steals per game. Laura Duncan, a 5-8 senior from Edmond, Okla., chipped in nine points, four rebounds and a team-high five assists. Duncan, who has 1,011 career points, contributes 7.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.61 steals.

The Stars finished sixth in the final NAIA Division I rankings. SAC co-champion OCU has won or tied for the league title 11 times. The Stars entered this season tied for the most wins of any women's basketball program in the nation over the past nine years.

OCU owns a 3-0 advantage over Lewis-Clark State in the all-time series. All three meetings have occurred in the NAIA Tournament. OCU last met Lewis-Clark State in the first round of the 2005 tournament and won 87-80.


ABOUT THE WARRIORS: Lewis-Clark State knocked off Biola (Calif.) 64-49 in the tournament first round Wednesday. Lewis-Clark (29-5) limited Biola to 27.9 percent shooting from the field in tying for the third most wins in a season in program history.

Kenna Reiter, a 5-8 junior, led all scorers with 13 points to go with six rebounds and three steals. Reiter tallies 7.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists a game. Jasmine Stohr, a 6-foot sophomore, added 11 points, four rebounds and two blocked shots. Stohr, an honorable-mention WBCA all-American, averages 15.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.94 steals per contest.

 

ABOUT THE COACHES: Rob Edmisson has posted a stellar 148-25 record in his fifth season at OCU and a 450-144 record overall in his 20th season as a head coach. Edmisson, a two-time SAC coach of the year, has led the Stars to SAC regular-season championships three times and three SAC Tournament titles. Edmisson coached the only player drafted into the WNBA from OCU, Mariam Sy. He won 192 games at Hutchinson (Kan.) and 110 as a high-school coach in Kansas.

Brian Orr owns a 229-70 record in his ninth season with Lewis-Clark State. Orr has guided Lewis-Clark State to eight national-tournament appearances and three consecutive Frontier Conference Tournament titles.
