OCU takes doubleheader 8-0, 5-1 against Northwestern

Lily LaVelle earned her sixth victory of the season Tuesday.

ALVA, Okla. – Oklahoma City University swept a doubleheader against Northwestern Oklahoma State 8-0, 5-1 on Tuesday at the Alva Recreation Complex.

The Stars, ranked third in NAIA softball, allowed Northwestern only six hits combined in the two games to improve to 10-6, 7-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

The Stars tallied four runs in the first inning to take control of game one. After Lily LaVelle singled to open the game, Autumn Mayberry singled and scored on a three-base throwing error, which also brought home LaVelle, to give OCU a 2-0 lead. Amanda Howard followed with a single, then Nathalie Timmermans reached on a fielding error by the Northwestern center fielder. Ashley Wilburn cleared the bases with a single to give the Stars a 4-0 advantage.

LaVelle homered in the second inning to give the Stars a 5-0 lead. LaVelle, a sophomore from Bridge Creek, Okla., finished game one 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. The Stars added single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.

Wilburn, a senior from Gilmer, Texas, earned the win in the first game to move to 4-3 on the season. Wilburn allowed three hits and struck out four batters in six innings of work. Jenni Gaby struck out the side in the seventh inning to end the game.

In game two, OCU scored twice in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Mayberry, a freshman from Mustang, Okla., singled in two runs in the inning to give OCU a 3-1 lead. The Stars pulled away with a pair of runs in the seventh inning.

Mayberry went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Howard finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs in game two.

LaVelle earned the win in the circle to improve to 6-3 on the season. LaVelle gave up a run on three hits and struck out seven in seven innings.

The Stars will meet Northwestern on Thursday in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at Ann Lacy Stadium.
