FORT WORTH, Texas – Oklahoma City University overcame a four-stroke deficit to win the Texas Intercollegiate on Monday at Hawks Creek Golf Club.
The Stars, ranked fourth in NAIA men's golf, finished three strokes better than Abilene Christian (Texas), ranked 24th in NCAA Division II, for its third win in four starts. OCU fired a 280-281–561.
OCU triumphed over eight ranked NAIA teams, including No. 1 Oklahoma Christian, ninth-ranked Lee (Tenn.) and No. 11 Oklahoma Baptist. The Stars rallied past first-day leader Sam Houston State, an NCAA Division I squad.
“It was a very competitive field, and it was a tight finish,” OCU coach Kyle Blaser said. “The guys really stepped up, and their game is progressing. We have a chance to be a very good team if we keep improving.”
Clark Collier, a sophomore from Edmond, Okla., ended a stroke behind tournament champion Alex Carpenter of Abilene Christian. Collier carded a 69-68–137 for OCU.
Michael Palmer, a freshman from Johannesburg, South Africa, finished two shots off the pace and a stroke behind Collier. Palmer scored a 71-67–138 for the Stars.
OCU's Julian Valenciana had a 70-73–143 to finish tied for 10th. Ben Bench shot 71-75–146, while Sondre Ronold recorded a 74-72–146.
The temperature reached 61 degrees, while winds were between 5-15 mph on the par-72, 6,847-yard layout.
OCU continues its season in the Midwestern State Invitational on March 22-23 at Wichita Falls Country Club in Wichita, Texas.
