OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University survived 68-62 against No. 25 Rogers State on Saturday afternoon inside Abe Lemons Arena.
The Stars, ranked seventh in NAIA Division I women's basketball, pulled out the win despite shooting 39.3 percent from the field. OCU won for the 12th straight time to improve to 18-3, 13-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. Rogers fell to 16-7, 8-7 in SAC play.
“Every team goes through a part of the year where you have to find a way to win,” OCU coach Rob Edmisson said. “Great teams find a way to win. We had been spoiled because we had played so well over the past several games. They're grinding right now. We'll get back to playing well.”
Chontaye Walter, a senior from Oklahoma City, led four Stars in double figures with 19 points, three assists and two steals. Donica Cosby, a junior from Coldwater, Miss., added 18 points and four assists.
Starr Fairbanks, a junior from Cincinnati, chipped in 12 points, five rebounds and two steals, while Lauren Gober, a freshman from Newcastle, Okla., had 10 points.
Rogers State got to within three points at 64-61 on a free throw from Jenny Hardin with 28 seconds to play before OCU clinched the game from the free-throw line. The Stars netted 4-of-6 at the line down the stretch.
The Stars turned up the intensity on defense in the second half with a press that forced Rogers State into 13 turnovers after the break.
“Our press was more to slow them [Rogers State] down than to get steals,” Edmisson said. “It was very good.”
OCU opened up a 10-point lead midway through the second half with an 11-0 run. Fairbanks hit a pair of free throws to start the streak and give OCU a 35-34 lead with 17:21 to play. Cosby hit a free throw and a jumper, and Holly Hardin scored on a layup with 14:20 remaining to push the OCU lead to 40-34. After Fairbanks hit two free throws, Gober capped the run with a tip-in basket to give the Stars their biggest lead of the game with 12:03 to play.
Roger State opened the game strong, pushing out to leads of 6-0 and 12-6 behind strong inside play. Hardin scored the first four points for RSU, and six of the team's first 12 points. Hardin finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. OCU led 27-26 at halftime.
The Stars will travel to Bethany, Okla. to face rival Southern Nazarene at 6 p.m. on Monday.
