THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University hosts an important Sooner Athletic Conference matchup with Rogers State at Abe Lemons Arena. Rogers State sits a half game back of OCU for fourth-place in the SAC standings.
Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students. Admission is free for all OCU athletic events to OCU faculty, staff and students with their ID.
ABOUT THE STARS: John Brown (Ark.) topped OCU 81-76 on Thursday in Siloam Springs, Ark. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the OCU (10-6, 8-5 SAC). The Stars went 12-of-24 from the free-throw line in the second half and finished 18-for-31 at the line for the game.
Jerome Phillips, a 6-foot-5 senior from Chickasha, Okla., paced the Stars with 17 points and seven rebounds, including all four of his 3-point attempts. Phillips averages 9.8 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists.
Jeremy McCarty, a 6-7 junior from Houston, put in 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals. McCarty is averaging 9.0 points and 5.6 rebounds a game. Chris Brown, a 6-0 senior from Spencer, Okla., scored 12 points. Brown leads the team with 17.4 points per game.
OCU is receiving votes in the latest NAIA Division I poll. In the preseason, the Stars were picked to finish sixth in the SAC. OCU has captured the SAC regular-season crown 13 times.
OCU is 2-3 all-time against Rogers State and have dropped three in a row in the series. Rogers State won 80-77 over OCU on Jan. 7 in Claremore, Okla. McCarty had 17 points and five rebounds, while Corey Bingham added 15 points.
ABOUT THE HILLCATS: Rogers State pounded Mid-America Christian 104-81 on Thursday in Claremore, Okla. to improve to 15-7, 8-6 in the SAC. Rogers State connected on 12 3-pointers in the game, including five from Deveric Taylor. Rogers State matched the school record for most points in a SAC game with 104.
Taylor, a 6-2 junior, led Rogers State with a career-high 25 points. Taylor averages 12.6 points. Sylvester Spicer scored 17 points off the bench in his first game back from an eight-game suspension. Spicer, a 6-6 senior, leads RSU in scoring at 15.1 points per game.
Rogers State was picked second by the conference coaches in the SAC preseason poll.
ABOUT THE COACHES: Kevin Morrissey enters his first full season as OCU head coach. Morrissey spent the previous four seasons as St. Gregory's coach. He also has been an assistant at Missouri State and Texas-Pan American. Morrissey played his college ball at Oklahoma Baptist and Oral Roberts and high school at Bishop McGuinness in Oklahoma City.
Lloyd Williams is in his second season as head coach at Rogers State. Williams served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator from 2006-08, and helped assemble the first recruiting class at RSU that included six NCAA Division I transfers.
