OCU at Lubbock Christian women's basketball preview

THE MATCHUP: Oklahoma City University plays for at least a share of the Sooner Athletic Conference in its matchup against Lubbock Christian (Texas). OCU is tied for first place in the SAC with Oklahoma Baptist entering the final weekend of the regular season.
The Stars will try to extend its winning streak to 20 games.


ABOUT THE STARS: OCU rallied past Wayland Baptist (Texas) 79-68 in overtime on Thursday in Plainview, Texas. The Stars dominated the overtime period, outscoring Wayland 18-7 to improve to 25-3, 20-1 in the SAC.

OCU scored the final six points of regulation to force overtime. Chontaye Walter finished off the run with a layup, tying the game at 61 with 10 seconds remaining.

Donica Cosby, a 5-foot-8 junior from Coldwater, Miss., notched 17 points, two assists and a steal for OCU. Cosby leads the team in scoring with 14.3 points per game.

Laura Duncan, a 5-8 senior from Edmond, Okla., chipped in 15 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Duncan averages 7.6 points and 3.5 assists. Lauren Gober, a 6-1 freshman from Newcastle, Okla., added 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Gober contributes 9.9 points per game.

Holly Hardin, a 6-2 senior from Chickasha, Okla., had 14 points and nine rebounds, and Starr Fairbanks, a 6-2 junior from Cincinnati, totaled 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

OCU has won 25 games or more in 12 consecutive seasons.

OCU ranks fifth in NAIA Division I in total assists (503), sixth in assists per game (18.0), sixth in field-goal percentage (0.462), eighth in scoring margin (18.1) and 10th in turnover margin (6.0).

The Stars are ranked sixth in the latest NAIA Division I poll. OCU was picked to finish second in the conference in the preseason. The Stars entered this season tied for the most wins of any women's basketball program in the nation over the past nine years.

OCU has a 32-6 all-time record against Lubbock Christian. The Stars crushed Lubbock 94-40 on Jan. 2 at Abe Lemons Arena.

 

ABOUT THE LADY CHAPS: Lubbock Christian routed Mid-America Christian 79-52 on Thursday in Lubbock, Texas. Lubbock scored 21 unanswered points in the first half and improved to 18-9, 13-8 in the SAC with the victory. Lubbock stands in third place in the SAC entering the final weekend with a one-game lead on Rogers State.

Severyn Smith led the way for Lubbock with 17 points. Smith, a 6-1 junior, averages 9.1 points per game. April Ehlers, a 5-9 sophomore, added 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Ehlers is averaging 7.5 points. Brittany Hampton leads Lubbock with 11.5 points and 3.5 assists per game.

Lubbock is ranked 25th in NAIA Division I. League coaches picked Lubbock Christian to finish fourth in the SAC in the preseason.

POSTSEASON IMPLICATIONS: If OCU and Oklahoma Baptist remain tied at the end of the regular season, a coin flip will decide who will be the top-seeded team at next week's SAC Tournament.

 

ABOUT THE COACHES: Rob Edmisson has posted a stellar 143-25 record in his fifth season at OCU and a 442-144 record overall in his 20th season as a head coach. Edmisson has led the Stars to SAC regular-season championships twice and the SAC Tournament title three times. Edmisson coached the only player drafted into the WNBA from OCU, Mariam Sy. He won 192 games at Hutchinson (Kan.) and 110 as a high-school coach in Kansas.

Steve Gomez has won more often than any other Lubbock Christian women's basketball coach. Gomez has a 151-73 record in his seventh season guiding Lubbock Christian.
