OCU perseveres for 89-78 overtime win over Wayland Baptist

Chontaye Walter tallied nine points, six rebounds and five assists Thursday.

PLAINVIEW, Texas – Oklahoma City University escaped with an 89-78 overtime triumph over Wayland Baptist (Texas) on Thursday at the Hutcherson Center.

The Stars, ranked sixth in NAIA Division I women's basketball, posted their 12th consecutive 25-win season, moving to 25-3, 20-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference. OCU won its 19th in a row.

OCU entered this season tied with Connecticut for the most wins in women's college basketball over the past nine seasons at 303.

Donica Cosby, a junior from Coldwater, Miss., topped five double-figure OCU scorers with 17 points. Laura Duncan, a senior from Edmond, Okla., totaled 15 points, six rebounds, eight assists and four steals, while Lauren Gober, a freshman from Newcastle, Okla., had 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

Holly Hardin added 14 points and nine rebounds, and Starr Fairbanks contributed 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

The Stars rolled in overtime, outscoring Wayland Baptist 18-7. Megan Coats gave Wayland its only lead of overtime 73-71 on a putback.

OCU answered with the next seven points. Gober sank a 3-pointer, then Cosby knocked in a pair of free throws. Hardin's layup provided the Stars a 78-73 advantage with 2:39 left in the contest.

The Stars sank free throws to score the final six points of the game. Emily Davis hit two free throws, then Duncan knocked in four more shots from the foul line.

OCU scored the final six points of regulation to force overtime. Davis hit a free throw, and Duncan nailed a 3-pointer at the 1:14 mark. Chontaye Walter dropped in the tying lay-in with 10 seconds left to send the game to overtime.

Shamon Doss had a layup to put Wayland Baptist up 71-65 with 2:34 left in regulation.

Wayland Baptist led 61-52 after Alex Williams' bucket at the 11:43 mark. OCU reeled off a 7-0 run as Lameka Oakes scored, then Cosby downed a trey. Hardin's basket cut the Stars' deficit to 61-59 with 9:15 left.

OCU led 37-32 after Cosby's 3 with 2:14 left in the first period. Wayland rallied to knot the score 39-39 at the half.

The Stars meet Lubbock Christian (Texas) at noon Saturday.
