OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University drubbed Lubbock Christian (Texas) 79-56 on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Defense propelled the Stars as Lubbock Christian shot 36.8 percent from the field in the game. OCU improved to 9-1, 3-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference men's basketball. Lubbock Christian fell to 7-2, 3-1.
Dee Proby, a senior from Round Rock, Texas, spearheaded OCU with 24 points and five rebounds, while Brandon Moton, a junior from Beaumont, Texas, added 22 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Nate Flowers notched 14 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals for OCU. Johnny Stephene dished out a team-high eight assists.
The Stars held Lubbock Christian to 23.1 percent shooting from the field in the first period. Lubbock Christian shot 6-for-26 overall and 0-for-11 on 3-pointers in the first.
Stephene's transition bucket put OCU up 32-8 with 4:33 left in the first. At that point, Lubbock Christian had hit only 4 of its first 18 shots from the floor. Proby had 15 points as OCU sank 13 of its first 24 attempts from the field.
“I was pleased with our defensive effort,” OCU coach Kevin Morrissey said. “We had a good round of practice that set the tone for our defense.”
Proby connected on 11 of 18 shots from the field and nailed two 3-pointers. OCU shot 50 percent for the game from the field and 7-for-13 on 3-pointers.
“That was the best Dee has played to date,” Morrissey said. “That was quite an effort for Nate on rebounds. The team took care of the ball pretty decently. We really shared the ball and played unselfishly. We tried to get the best shot.”
OCU led by as much as 28 points. Moton had a lay-in to put the Stars ahead 74-46 with 3:25 remaining in the game.
The Stars meet Mid-America Christian at 8 p.m. Thursday on the road in Oklahoma City.
