OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University women's basketball walloped Mid-America Christian 74-45 on Thursday night at the Gaulke Activity Center.
The Stars, ranked second in the NAIA Division I polls, head into the holiday break undefeated at 9-0, 4-0 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
OCU was led by the hot hand of Lauren Gober, a sophomore from Newcastle, Okla. Gober shot 5-for-8 from the field and was 7-for-8 from the free-throw line en route to a 20-point performance. She also added a game-high six rebounds for the Stars.
Gober currently ranks 15th nationally in 3-point baskets per game with an average of 2.7 per contest. Thursday she contributed to that stat by shooting 3-for-4 from 3-point range.
Donica Cosby, a senior from Coldwater, Miss., added 15 points on 4-for-9 shooting from the field. Cosby posted two assists and three steals in the win. Taylor Booze, a junior from Duncanville, Texas, contributed team highs with four steals and three assists for the Stars.
OCU shot 44.9 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range in the win. The Stars defense held Mid-America Christian to 34.0 percent shooting from the field. The Lady Evangels were a paltry 1-of-11 from beyond the arc, including eight misses in the second half of action.
OCU saw its 10-point halftime lead over the Lady Evangels bloom after a 12-2 run in the early minutes of the second half saw the Stars hold a 52-28 lead. Mid-America Christian rallied to cut into its deficit after a 6-0 run of their own, but the Stars stormed back.
OCU went on a 10-0 run that began at the 10:18 mark and took a 28-point lead with 6:43 to play in the game. The run was capped by a pair of Breezy Martin free throws for the Stars. OCU outscored the Lady Evangels 43-24 in the second half of action to end with the 74-45 victory.
Scoring was hard to come by in the opening minutes of the contest, with the Stars' first points coming from the free throw line 4:06 into the game. Martin, a senior from Oklahoma City, sank the pair from the charity stripe, and the scoreboard read 3-2 in favor of the home team. These two shots sparked a 12-2 OCU run. Mid-America Christian cut the lead to five points with 2:07 remaining in the opening period, but the Stars closed with a 5-0 run to go into halftime with a 31-21 lead.
The Stars now begin an extended Christmas break and return to the court on Jan. 1 in a 6 p.m. contest against Rogers State at Abe Lemons Arena.
