Azusa Pacific edges OCU in NAIA volleyball championships

Stars go to 0-2 in pool play

Xiaoting Ma brought her OCU career record kill total to 1,416.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Oklahoma City University remained winless in the NAIA volleyball championships after falling 22-25, 25-20, 25-27, 25-20, 15-13 to Azusa Pacific (Calif.) on Wednesday at the Tyson Events Center.

Xiaoting Ma, a senior from Dalian, China, rang up 24 kills, 22 digs and three blocks to play OCU's ringleader. The 24th-ranked Stars went to 23-13 this season. Eighth-ranked Azusa Pacific upped its record to 29-6.

The Stars face 19th-ranked Rocky Mountain (Mont.) at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Tyson Events Center. OCU will conclude its season since it stands 0-2 in pool play.

Danielle Robison, a freshman from Dallas, posted 29 assists, while Samantha Ball, a junior from Edmond, Okla., amassed 27 assists and 12 digs for OCU. Alex Benbrook, a junior from Enid, Okla., notched 12 kills and eight blocks.

Victoria Cross picked up 22 digs, and Taylor Rowton had nine kills and two blocks for the Stars.

Ma gave the Stars an 11-10 edge with a kill in the fifth set. Ma pounded down another kill to tie the set 12-12. Marguerite Hanna answered with kill to help Azusa Pacific get to match point.

The Stars' Raissa Santos extended the match with a kill. Hanna had a kill to finish the match.

In the first set, OCU erased a 7-3 deficit. Vicky Murphy's kill, then Benbrook and Ma combined on a block to put the Stars ahead 21-19. Murphy nailed a kill to give the Stars set point at 24-21, and Ma clinched the first set with a kill.

OCU overcame 6-1, 7-3 and 20-17 deficits on the way to taking a 2-1 lead in sets. With Azusa holding a 24-23 edge, Benbrook and Santos knocked down kills to give OCU a 25-24 lead. Both teams traded attack errors as OCU had a 26-25 lead. The Stars capitalized using Santos' kill to take the set.
