OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma City University remained unbeaten after an 88-58 win over Dallas Christian on Saturday at Abe Lemons Arena.
Brandon Moton, a junior from Beaumont, Texas, topped OCU with 25 points. The Stars moved to 6-0 in men's basketball.
Moton knocked in 4 of 7 3-point attempts and added four rebounds and three assists.
“He had his feet set,” OCU coach Kevin Morrissey said of Moton. “He had 26 points against Oklahoma State in exhibition play. We have been talking to him about getting that kind of game out of him again.”
Bryant Williams, a senior from Austin, Texas, recorded 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots, and Johnny Stephene, a junior from Boynton Beach, Fla., had 10 points and two assists for the Stars.
Williams threw down a couple of dunks, the first jam coming off Cesar Cuevas' feed following a Kaleb Smith steal. Williams gave OCU a 36-23 lead with 1:52 left in the first half.
“I'm really pleased with how aggressive he was,” Morrissey said. “When he got that first dunk, he had a lot of confidence. He got tip-ins. He was active.”
OCU overcame 23 turnovers Saturday. Dallas Christian outscored the Stars 25-21 in points off turnovers.
“I didn't think we took care of the ball,” Morrissey said. “We had careless passes. We had more turnovers than assists. A lot of guys played a lot of minutes. I think some guys didn't finish. We had fastbreaks we didn't capitalize on.”
Up 22-19, OCU increased its advantage with a 10-0 run in the first half. Moton sparked the run with back-to-back treys. Stephene dropped in a couple of free throws, then Nate Flowers put the Stars ahead 32-19 with a jumper at the 5:02 mark of the first.
The Stars scored in a couple of bursts in the second half. Moton's putback triggered an 8-0 spree to give OCU a 56-33 advantage with 13:11 left in the game. Stephene capped the run with a 3-pointer.
OCU added a 14-0 splurge to build a 72-42 advantage at 6:23 left in the game. Williams converted a 3-point play, a dunk and a putback during that Stars surge, starting it with a tip-in and free throw. Dee Proby sank a 3-pointer to finish OCU's run.
Moton's 3 provided OCU its largest lead at 77-44 with 5:16 showing on the clock.
The Stars begin Sooner Athletic Conference play by facing Mid-America Christian at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Abe Lemons Arena.
